no you see 4703 crushed hunks of scrap metal. such a waste, so many parts could have been recycled without giving mazda liability problems.

This literally pisses me off. They had insurance covering everything, I don't doubt that. That's why it was just easy to junk the cars... I can't imagine being one of the crew who had to crush them all. Talk about hard to stomach...

Soon as I saw that I figured it was a BALLAST MISTAKE. When I was at sea they accidentally filled our ballast tanks with fuel. Buckled the decks and made our ship unseaworthy. Anyway I wonder if any of the yard workers made off with a few of those cars.

Too bad they couldn't condemn them in other ways... but I understand the political problems. Stupid politics.

Daninski,

I hope they did. That's a far better use...

Ryan,

They probably had other options, idk... :(

Like the article says, because the cars mostly survived, insurance didn't really cover it.

I see why Mazda did it, to cover their asses. They thought about it, what they could salvage, even did test on how the cars sat in the boat so see at what direction and angles would cause damage. I'd even be affraid of the sea air causing premature rust on outer panels, there's alot that could potentially happen and that won't be found out until much later on. It hurt I'm sure, but it was the best move to preserve Mazda's reputation rather than throwing 4000 potential lemons on the roads...could cost more in the long run maintaining those vehicles, compensating the owners to keep them happy, and hope there's no class-action lawsuit that happens over it.
