i have one on my 1.6 sohc am using on of racingmazda turbo kits am just some guy pushing the limits of the sohc. its one of my projects still in the works but am going to use a GT35R just because i want to and RIC at RM would go with it. will be using a TEC II to control the engine.

i won't know until i get it up and running its just a little project that me and ric are doing at racingmazda to find out what kind of HP #'s a 1.6 sohc engine can do. the goal is 300whp on stock trans and engine for shits&giggles. if i remember right its about the same size as a 50trim turbo just its ballbearing. am just some guy trying to get stuff made for 1.6 sohc. no one out there is doing one and i aleady have another mx-3 with a BP so i don't need people telling me just go BP when i have one. i own 3 mx-3's. RIC at RM already made 475whp@18psi no need for me to push the BP. after i finish that project done next is finding another 92-93 MX-3 and put a FS 2.0 in it and boost it to but thats maybe a year from now.

To my knowledge the SOHC 1.6 uses the small B6 rods and crank. A while back I did a search and compared various B6 and BP specs and found some interesting differences on MSN Autos. One spec is that the SOHC B6 supposedly has a longer stroke than the other B6's...I haven't had time to tear into my old SOHC motor yet to compare actual part dimensions. The SOHC is just as potent as the other motors. I'm curious as to port volume and valve diameter in that the SOHC could have larger ports and valves in stock form (i'm not saying it does or doesn't). A plus to the SOHC is it does have a main cap girdle like some of the BPs. The SOHC could yield less parasitic drag than the DOHC engine and the rockers could possibly be easily modified to give a larger lift. One thing that needs to be looked at on the SOHC head design is the quench area size in the cumbustion chambers. Quench area is a HUGE ket to avoiding detination as it has much better flame control consintrating the energy to the center of the piston building a strong flame kurnl. The quench area is the area of the combustion chamber from where it meets the head gasket sealing ring up to the bottom of the valves. You basically want it to run prallel with the block until it meets the first tangent point of the valve. Then the pent roof of the combustion chamber should only run from that tangent point to the outter tangent point of the other valve set. Valve sets being... exh. set and intake set which should for a V shape with the spark plug tip extended as far as possible into the combustion area center with out touching the piston at TDC. Dished & flat top pistons work bestl because they force all the pressure to the center of the combustion chamber. This results in a more uniform flame front and kernal which also equalizes the flame temperature zones for more even heat transfer. This is what minimizes hot spots (with cermaic coatings can nearly be eliminated with proper spark plug heat range). Hot spots are what cause the types of detination that litterally burns holes through things. Basically turns your motor into a plasma cutter (hot spot + pressure is how plasma cutters work).

As for the SOHC transmission....don't waste your time, the spyder gears are a LOT softer than even the Pro-LX's. I broke 2 of them with my old VJ-14 setup at 14.5psi. The second trans only had about 36,000 miles on it and it broke with NO wheel hop while using a blend of Red Line MT-90 w/ 1 bottle of Red Line Heavy Duty Shock Proof gear oil!!! My friend across the mountain did the same thing, broke 2 of them. The only 1.6 MX-3 peeps that seem to swear their' stock trans. have taken worse abuse are DOHC owners from what I've seen. That maybe another thing to look into as they may be a beefied up version equivilant to the Pro-LX or stronger. The Pro-LX box was made around 90-94 and maybe till 96ish for the Escort GT's. The DOHC MX-3s are 94-96. Timmy's car did have a Escort GT trans in it until we broke the spider gears with a Mitsu small 16G. Then we put my back up Pro-LX trans in his car and he SWORE the Pro-LX had a taller first gear. Don't know if it is true for a fact or not, but it is possible.

Thanks for all that info JWMotorsports

I do know that the f-series trans is not the strongest trans mazda made. but most guys that have a 92-93 sohc have that trans.

iam just trying to get things made for the guys that have that engine. i just what to know how far in stock form eng. & trans can go.

the LX trans has shorter gears acc. faster than the f-series trans that has longer gears.

the bottom block is the same as a 1.6 dohc MX-3 & 1.6 dohc Miata They make aftermarket rod, pistons etc. etc. which are interchagable with the 1.6 dohc mx-3 which are in tern interchageable with the 1.6 sohc mx-3. bottom end blocks are all the same. AS for a header they do make one for the 1.6 sohc if u look hard enough here a pic http://corksport.com/store/large/oodp/m ... eader.html

Here the site http://corksport.com/page/yi/MX3.html U have to remember hardy anybody make anything for the 1.6 sohc mx-3. I did answer ur first ? sort of racingmazda make a turbo kit for the 1.6 sohc but it is a log style turbo manifold. they do sell the manifold alone. But me and RIC RM are trying to redesign a tubealor manifold for the sohc. here how the kit looks. http://www.racingmazda.com/images/s1-installed.jpg and here the site http://www.racingmazda.com/. ADD LOL
