really weird starting noise

i have a 93 1.6l sohc and everytime i go to start my car it takes a lil while for it to start and it also makes a really hard scartchin noise ive had people say its my battery but im not sure

could be your starter missing on the flywheel...mine does that its like a errrrr sound. have someone stand right by the engine as you start it up, u can get a voltage meter and test the battery, test the starter to see if its getting enough power.
