MSD Ignition

Post by Bochek »

my auto teachers got a msd igntion box for sale, its the 6a.

im 99.9% sure it will work with our cars. so my question is, how much is it worth?

Its in MINT condition, not a scratch on it, used once on a pontiac.

Thanks,

My bad, its about 270 new on driverfx

Id offer him 220, its still used he cant expect to get what he paid including taxes

almost any msd external coil will work with 6 series boxes, blaster 2 and blaster ss are the most popular i guess

Ebay has them for $100-$150. My personal preference would be to go for MSD 6A or 6AL with MSD Blaster 2 coil and an external HEI module. 6AL has many different rev limiter chips that you can plug in - i think 6A has no rev limiter (with a max of 14k rpms). Its really easy to install in a SOHC - DOHC is a pain in the a$$ because you have to hack up the disty internals and modify the cap too. And finding a spot for all these is not so easy with the stock airbox (DOHC).

Actually the Blaster SS coil is the one reccommended for our cars, according to the MSD techs on the forum.

How does ignition works and how are they connected?

They go between the ecu and the ignition coil, it modifies the signal to the coil so instead of sparking, it more of arcs (at the sparkplug) not unlike a welding spark, the spark lasts for 20 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

This means that ALL of the fuel gets burnt. and you get complete combustion inside the cylinder.

Besides that some of them have other features too, like rev limiters exct.

as far as i know, it will work with just the msd box, nothing else, but a blaster SS coil would improve the system overall.
