I noticed that some people have put a small vent filter on the line that goes into the intake just before the TB, instead of plugging it in. Why is this? It seems to have to do with either turbo, or KLZE..... I would like to bypass the EGR on my K8, but I couldn't find anything positive about it. Is it reasonably possible? Is it okay to ask 2 ??s at once, or should it be 2 topics?

i'm not 100% sure on the EGR (don't have it here), but i'd imagine the ecu would throw some codes if it weren't there.....

Maybe the filter is a "poor mans" oil catch can?

That is exactly what it is (poor mans oil catch can). It releases the head gasses without passing them into the intake which over time will cause a ton of oil and carbon build-up in any part of the motor north of that tube that it replaces.
It costs about 1.00 at any auto parts store. Is illegal since it lets the gasses out into the atmosphere without burning them, but is very useful IMO.


As for the EGR, there isn't much sense in getting rid of it. You won't get much HP, and the car will have a check engine light on all the time. In GA. they won't let you pass emisions with a CEL light. So if you do decide to do it I'd check your local emissions codes first.

Sorry, I was too vague... I meant the line that comes to a "T" and attatches just before the TB and after the VAF. Not the PCV line. I think it's EGR...

I think that you are confused. The PCV valve sits in the top of your Valve cover and has a line that runs to a Tee fitting the straight through runs to the intake after the throttle body and the teed portion returns to the stock Air tube before the TB. That is part of your PCV system or Possitive Crankcase Ventilatio.

EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. These fittings and tubes are all metal as the Exhaust Gas is extremely hot and would melt rubber hoses. Your EGR runs from your rear exhaust manifold to an EGR valve via a Metal tube. Hidden well in the back of the engnie by the firewall.

Thanks. So the PCV valve line and the ones with metal tubes are all part of the PCV system. Now, back to my 1st question... Why do some guys put on a breather right after thr Tee, instead of plugging it into the air tube? I understand why on turbos...

I have never seen a breather filter installed there but would guess that a person would do that if they had a CAI and didn't have a place to run the tube to. These lines are also for ventilation and the vacum created by the intake would pull the gases out of tubes. A filter there would just vent it into the air.

Cool, thanks. That's what I guessed. I think I only saw it on turbos, so that'd make sense. They don't want to push pressure into the crankcase.
