Auto Cross ideas

Well i think i'm going to go auto crossing in my MX3. I know its just the 1.6 4cylinder but what the hey why not. Anybody got suggestions on Springs/shocks/struts etc.... i know the kinds of tires to look for but on the others i'm not to sure. Also i know this may sound kind of wierd but the strip down and roll cages anybody know if its really worth it?

Strip the car down and roll cage it is the cheapest and best way to improve the speed and handeling of the car, but it is also the most annoying if you are going to drive the car on the road. It will squeek and rattle and the roll cage will make having any passangers very difficult.
Auto Power sells great bolt in and weld in kits for MX-3 roll cages if you are interested.
As for springs and struts get the Eibach springs and KYB struts. That is the cheapest set-up, but a good one.

Be carefull what mods you do, as stripping the interior will put you into a class that you will never win in. Have fun yes, but going up against other cars with way more setup may become quite discouraging.

I assume this will be a double duty car, daily driver/weekend warrior. In that case, i'd suggest a set of ZX2 S/R Tokico struts and H&R springs.

But first a foremost, learn to drive the car at the limit AS IT SITS NOW. More mods will just make the already steep learning curve, that much steeper.

A set of Hotbits with the dual springs is $900.00 plus shipping... For the same set with rebound/comp adjustment (one knob) the cost is $1117.00 for A rally spec. If we need to lengthen them all custom one off stuff runs 10% more so.... A custom valved and made rally set for you car is $1228.00 plus shipping. We will need to check to see if we can put a canister on the dampers.

Just to let you know this is for the BG/Astina chassis which our cars are based off of.

Right now im building a staged rally car. Hopefully I will have pictures of the build up!

The KYB's are cheaper at local Advance Auto Parts. The struts you want to buy local because when they have lifetime warranty, you can just walk in and swap out your proken ones. If your store doesn't have struts indexed for the MX3, have them look up a 93 Mazda Protege ..... same struts.

FYI:

90-94 Protege
91-96 Escort GT
97-03 ZX2

Any of those will interchange with the MX3, not just the 93 Protege.

and again, i really feel the KYBs are inferior for autox racing.

If all he can afford right now are $60 specials, then any new strut is better than 12 year old 100K mile busted a-- struts for autocross.

$62.97 x 4 = $251.88 for a set of KYBs

vs.

$149.69 + ~$35 + ~$30 (ship)= $211.69 for S/Rs and bearings

not only is he still ahead on cash, but ahead on performance.

Think i'm going to go with KYBs ane Eibochs as for stopin anybody have suggestions seems like all the break kits are outragous in my opion. I have found big rotors for decent but with little caplier would the rotor do me much good along with a goodset of pads? Or going all 4 disc ?

If you're looking for pads, look at the Satisfied Brakes lineup. They make a good entry level pad, a ceramic pad, and then two levels of full race pads for our car. They're available at tirerack.com

Do the Ford Racing come with a Lifetime Replacement warranty? That's why I'm still leery as I've heard a few people have broke them within a couple years.

Would like to up the calipers to 4 piston but they all are 1000 plus.

I don't know about they're warranty, but i do know i beat the hell out of them autox racing for 2-3 years and they are still doing duty on a friends autox car...
