strange problem with idle and shuting off

so the other day i was going down the damn road fine and the car dies, now it didnt stop running but it died ? so i got home and shut it off and jumped it and it ran ok so today i go and try and start it and it was acting like the battery was dead so i jumped it and it was idleing at 3,000 RPM and thats way to high..... so what the hell?
