My MX-3 "dies"

Post by dek »

Hi!

Im from sweden so my english isnt 100% so bare with me.

I have a MX-3 with a major problem, it has "died" during driving a couple of times.

It´s like this: for more than five times my Mazda has shut it self off while im driving it and when it happens the rpm-meter just dives down to 0 and every lamp on the dashboard turns on. You can compare it with if you was to turn the ignition-key off while driving and the turning it back 2 steps into the position before the start-engine.

Every time this has happend I was driving like 60mph (~100Km/h) on the fith gear. I drive it every day in the city and it works just fine in that way, but when I push it a little and bring it up to speed this happens.

When this happen I cant start the car again right away, but after like 2 minutes it starts like usual again and I can drive it calmly as far as I want to.

Has anyone got any idea what the problem can be? I´ve been told it could have something to do with the fuel-system, like something clogging up the fuel-filter or that the fuelpump is starting to give up.

The car is an MX-3 1,8 24V V6 -92

All help is much appreciated,

Best Regards

Daniel

I would have a disty on standby. I had the same symptoms and then one day it would not start at all. As I remember my engine used to just shut off anyplace, anytime but all my dashboard lights stayed off when the engine shutdown as if the engine was still running.

The fuel system could be a possibility. But for this kind of problem there are a lot of reasons the car is doing that. Start checking the three main components of the engine - fuel, spark, and compression. Then go from there.

I agree with the FLy guy. Totally sounds as the module is heating up under stress. HEI mod is a good decission as I have a 92 and the exact same thing happend when mine went. 5th gear and pushing a bit. Try this out.. http://www.geocities.com/dejayxtravagan ... NSTALL.doc

The first time my car went dead I was on the highway cruising along, I'd just left the parking lot after parking for only 10 min on a really hot afternoon. All of a sudden no power and no RPM. I tried to start her up on the fly but she didn't fire. So I coasted over to the breakdown lane and popped the hood. Did not see anything out of the ordinary. :x Man was I ticked off because I was like 25 miles away from home and it was hot outside and I did not want to wait for a tow truck. So while silently begging, I got back in the car and I gave it one more try. She fires right up. I immediately closed the hood and I drove it home like a bat out of hell. Once I got off the highway she stopped on me a few more times but she was nice enough to take me home so I could fix her. :)

Is there another site that explains in detail how to convert to HEI. Every time I open the site that is listed above, it asks for me to sign in to some site with a password. It locks the screen, unless I hit cancel in the site box and then everything disappears and goes back to the previous page. I'd like to get the information in case I need it later.
thanks
Owner of 7 different cars, 5 being convertibles. 1990 Miata is one of my summer fun cars. I enjoy that car so much, I thought owning a MX3 would be fun also. Drive with your top open or top down. See my car web site at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/816145

Hmmm.....Sounds like you will need to do a virus/spyware scan on your pc.
