EGR...can I ditch it?

I am sure this subject comes up often but I would appreciate any help I can get.
I have a 2.5 swapped into my GS and I would like to bypass the EGR valve if possible and maybe even remove it from the vehicle and just bolt a plate over the hole.
It is to my understanding that the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation ) valve does just as the name implies and re routes used gasses through the intake therefore reducing horsepower. Please correct me if I am wrong and also if any one knows if they are beneficial and how so.

You can remove it but you will get a constant check engine light and could cause you to fail e-tests(if you have them where you live).

CEL light may not be an issue since he's runing a KLDE engine and I don't believe I got any CELs when running my KL01 ECU. That's assuming he's running the correct ECU for his KLDE.
As Maz say's, it could have negative side effects wrt emissions tests. Most opt to remove it, indicating potential HP gains which I'm not aware of the specifics. Emissions tests are passable without an EGR system provided eveything else is in a proper state of tune.

I don't have any emissions test what so ever here in central Oregon. Basically if you have $56 you can register anything with a VIN so I am not worried about that aspect but also would like to find a way around setting off the CEL. As big as a pain in the a-- as they can be they can also be of help, but if it were always on I wouldn't know if it had thrown another code.....I know I am running a 2.5 ECU but I don't know the code or model number? can anyone tell me where to find that. I don't mean to be so ignorant but the ECU I acquired was from Ebay so I don't have a direct source of what it might be.

everybody loves ditchin their egr's, now the funny thing is theirs no reason why, it actually helps alot, when open it richens yours afr those gases r very flamable so they make u run richer helps full economy alot, plus if u use your mind and r bored enough u can use it 2 your advantage in certain circumstances.......but we'll talk about that crap someother time when im bored enough 2 wanna write more

The only reason I wanted to ditch it is because I figured that along with those flammable gases that it is sending through it is also sending other things like soot and carbon build up and worse case scenario it could send oil or fragments of a damaged part through again. Just a thought though

I would definately like to hear more about those advantages and situations if you don't mind NOTHING. I'm always looking for ways to get a little more power or kick outta my engine.

It is not as much of a gain as you might think. Also, the possibility of it putting fragments back into the combustion chamber are not really a concern since they would have to be awefully small. If you had something passing through it would most likely be a huge problem the first time.
If you have a KL-DE from an American car you will get a CEL light if you take the EGR off. There is no way to trick the car into thinking it is still there.
Also, for all the work it would take I'd spend my money on some bushings, a strut bar, CAI or something else cheap that would add some speed.

I guess NOTHING is too board to type out "two" or "are" heh.
FYI for searchers, lots of people pass smog even in Cali (like me) without a functioning EGR.
