Hi there, sorry for stupid question ,but one thing(or one of the things) I don't understand about turbo setup is... How do you increase or decrease the boost ?
Any help ?

Waste gate is usually the part that controlls the amount of boost you get. It is set as a maximum and will open when the boost reaches a certain level o relieve the excess pressure. example, you have a turbo that will push maximum of 15PSI, bu tyou only want 7. So you set the boost controller at 7 PSI and it will tell the waste gate to open and relieve any pressure above 7 psi.

Boost controller- is a computer that will controll the waste gate and set boost to what you want. Somtimes it is a part of an engine management system or you can buy it seperately from one of numerous manufacturers.

the wastegate pressure is controlled via a spring,
the spring is what holds the valve in place. You can get different pressure spring for any likings. I changed 3 times mine (5, 10, 15) and added a boost controller to bump it up to 20.
Rememer though that you CAN'T go lower than what the spring pressure is. So if you have a spring pressure of 15psi, you can't run lower than that.
Don't go out and buy the smallest spring and just control with the boost controller because the boost will get there faster if you have a spring that is close to the boost you run.
Let's say you boost 20psi and have a 5psi spring. Well it'll leak a bit before hitting 20psi thus taking more time to get there.
A buddy of mine told me that and he knows his stuff

You might want to add that the wastegate is a little valve that lets exhaust gas pass the turbo. When that happens the turbine in the turbo cant spin any faster and therefore cant drive the impeller to make any more boost.

I also learned that you have to have that boost controler hooked up only if you have to change the waste gate to some other settings. Is that correct ?

Im not sure what youre asking.. The only reason for a boost controller is to increase the level of boost if you want to make more power..
Can you clarify your question a little more?

If you have your waste get set at 8psi and you dont want to change that then you dont need a boost controller.

that is correct... to a point.... with a wastegate it opens a little at a time (think spring with a building pressure).... but with a boost controller you have a solonoid to basically close off the hose going to the wastegate actuator, and opens it when you reach the desired boost level....

Good question.....I've wondered about this too...

So the boost controller actually controls how the wastegate reacts? and its optional because the wastegate has a default PSI level?

Most turbo's have an internal waste gate too..usually good for low boost operations.
