Ideas please?

Post by Thassodar »

Please take the time to read this! I'm desperate!

Aight I gots me a 92' 4 cyl, 1.4 liter DOHC(I think, may be SOHC gotta check) MX-3. No probs so far, 116k miles on it, bought it used. Why did I buy it used? Cause the interior is NOT stock. Two 12" MTX Subs powered by two 400 watt(I think) amps, all installed with monster cables. Two 9 1/2" speakers in the door and two 1" tweeters. Illegal tint (I'm in Texas, inspection doesn't care), and thats all. Now my car SOUNDS good, but it isn't as fast as I'd like.
I'm lookin for ways to make it faster without doing a engine swap (I can't live without my car for 2 months, plus I don't gots the cash to be doin that). No moon roof, no wing, no nothin. Oxidization is movin in on the top, that car itself is tan. Everything in the engine is stock, might be getting a carbon fiber hood soon, and maybe cold air intake. I dunno what to do, I gots me a job now and want to make my car look cool and sound good. I'll post pics of the sound system in the pictures forum soon, but I need some ideas on how to increase the performance of my car. The rims aren't stock but they don't look that great. I'll post a pic of my car if anyone replies to this post. Thanks!
Any suggestions would be friggin awesome.

Well two things, engine is a 1.6L SOHC.

2nd, save up and do a N/A BP swap. SOHC is a waste of money to do anything with.

i have a 92 1.6 16v sohc should be the same in yours or you may have an 8v eighther way the engine really sucks if your looking for performance. but thier are a few things you can do. cold air intake, hotter plugs, bigger tb (thiers a swap list in the faq section), good set of wires, accel or msd coil, catback exhaust, 3 or 4 wire o2 sensor, and finaly use high octane gas and advance the timing as far as you can. thats pretty much all you can do the biggest gains you will see is from advancing the timing everything else just builds it up from that. what part of tx you in im down by waco hit me up if you need a hand.

also if its a manual you should really look into a short shifter and some bronzeoil bushings to tighten it up

Argh, apparently my other post didn't go through like it said it did.... Lemme retype what I can remember.

I'm pretty sure that doing a engine swap is out of the question, seeing that I have 1.) No other car 2.) Enough money to GET the engine, plus all the parts (reading some of the swap notes, seems like its a pain in the a--) 3.) NO friggin clue what I'm doing.

Now if all those things were in great supply, I'd do a swap in a jiffy. Seeing as they aren't, I may just do the suggestions that gapimpin spoke about. But then again BuGS said that it'd be a waste of money to do anything to the stock engine, although I'm not really looking to race anyone... :x

Basically I CAN save up for a engine, but its the whole SWAPPING part that's going to eat me alive, since I'm a full-time student and a part-time sales associate (retail, yay! ). It is a manual transmission, so it should be a little easier to do, right?

BTW I'm in Arlington, west of Dallas a bit. You can email me at thassodar@hotmail.com if you want to swap info and actually talk. BTW, I don't believe there is a MX-3 Club in the Central US/Texas area is there? If not, I know alot of local folks with MX-3's who'd start one probably. If you'd like some pics just ask, it's no biggie. I'll post some picks of the system as well if yall want.

I dunno, the swap is tempting, but for max performance out of the stock engine I may follow gapimpin's suggestions. If anyone else has an alternate way to get some sweet performance out of a stock engine, post up.

Did I actually just say sweet performance in the same sentence with STOCK ENGINE? Someone shoot me....

First of all- DO NOT SPEND ANY $$ ON YOUR CURRENT ENGINE.

The only way it will EVER be even semi-fast is to drop it off a cliff.

Seriously- I have seen BP swaps completed for $500. It can be done.

You have THE easiest car to do the swap in. SAve your $$- do the BP swap.

N2O all done is at least $500 and that's your cheapest power added and a BP is about the same price and will likely have the same amount of power.

I know I sound like a complete moron, but with no mechanical backround whatsoever (besides changing my oil), WTF does BP stand for? Another thing, how the hell can I get my hands on one? I've been reading these posts for friggin forever with BP here, BP there, and I have a small inkling of what it might be. :?: If someone could clarify, perhaps this post can go on FAQ (unless someone else asked this question).

The BP is the engine code for the Mazda-designed 1.8L DOHC motor found in the Mazda Protege LX (GT in Canada) and the Ford Escort GT. Later versions were also used in the Miata, Mercury Tracer, and Kia Sephia.

Wil (Gro Harlem) made a great FAQ on these motors and what all swaps over.
