Oil leak at High RPM

Post by MX3driver »

hey everyone.. I'm brand new to my new brilliant black 95 MX3.. I love it. Just wondering why I can smell a VERY little bit of oil at higher RPM's.. when you are easy on the throttle.. no smell at all.. and it NEVER burns that famous blue smoke.. anyone have a fix or any idea what it is.. thanks alot everyone

The only thing that comes to mind would be the PCV valve, but I've never experienced the symptom you describe. Total shot in the dark. Pull the pcv valve out, pull it off the vacume line and shake it. You should hear it rattle back and forth a lil bit. Also check the dipstick when the car is running, maybe even after you've reved it up a bit. If you get any kind of smoke out of that pipe where your dipstick is, replace the PCV valve.
It might be slow, but it's not a civic!

The PCV valve acts as a check valve. Suck on it and see if it only allows air one way. (MMMMM isn't oil tasty!) Next the oil pump on any car (as long as it's mechanical) will increase oil pressure as RPMS rise. So the higher your RPMs are the more likely you are to leak oil. Furthermore, I'd say that maybe your valve seals are bad. How many miles on your motor? Have you ever done a comrpession test?

Just got the car about 2 weeks ago.. so I havn't done a compression test on it yet.. and it's got around 278,000kms.. alot i know, but runs amazing.. minus the high RPM oil burn!!

so you smell it in your car when idling, or when driving?
cause it could just be an exhaust leak that's being sucked into your
cabin via the vent. do you have a layer of film on your windsheild? wipe with a cloth and see

Sure it isn't a V6? Seems odd, maybe there's something I don't know.

Nope... 16valve dohc.. only thing on it i can see is the cold air intake.. nothing special.. I don't know if the guy that had it before me did something special or not..there definately isn't anything visually standing out done to the engine
