need to see if this is ZE

does anybody know how hard it is to remove the intake manifold to check the ports??
i just got my car back, it feels much faster, but the head code is KL-1A1 instead of KL31 (which was the code of the one they told me was going in). they're really claiming that it is a true ZE, but i want to be 100% sure.
i'm told that the best way to see is what shape the ports are (square = ZE, D shaped = DE).
is there any other identifying marks visible? about how long would a mechanic take to remove/check/reinstall?

You dont need to take the intake manifold off, you can tell by looking at it.
This is a straight neck ze

This is a curved neck ze (or possibly a klde millenia)

This is a klde, notice the neck is short and straight and the runners are more oval shaped

what intake manifold did it come with?
you could also easily check the cams

Means that it is a KLZE. The other head will Read KL31-1A1.
A seach will tell you what the DE heads say.

you just answered your own question buddy... lol and wasted bandwidth
If the head says KL-1A1 then it is a DE pure and simple, as discussed a bazillion times.

Ian, don't tell me you went to Tiger Japanese and they installed that? That's the place that Uday HIGHLY recommended as a reliable source for Ze stuff. I feel for you bud, I know how long you waited and saved for this . Did the old switcheroo hoping you wouldn't notice. If that's the case, right back to them and right in their face until it gets corrected. Hey, a little extra compensation for THEIR mistake is also in order. This also makes me think that you better go over everything else with a fine toothed comb - clutch, belts, pully's, etc. Even check to make sure the TB isn't a POS either. Didn't Uday or anyone go down with you for a little support/guidance with all of this? Let us know what happens.

it is a curved neck manifold, but the heads say kl-1a1, so i'v got the impression it is a DE. i called them and asked about it and they're denying everything saying it's gaurenteed 100% a ZE. i asked how i should prove to them that it's a DE (after explaining the head codes, he didn't seem to see that as proof) and he said to have "any expert look at it and they will tell u its ZE" (ya, sure)
and i actually asked to SEE the engine when i droped it off, they brought me to the back, pointed at one, i checked the head and the code was right....they put a diff engine in than the one they showed me.
i'm kinda wondering tho, what recourse do i have if they don't wanna budge, and what official proof (other than internet and hearsay) can i show them to prove that its not what they think it is??

Perhaps it's not necessary to prove what a ZE is but rather prove what a DE is. Get documantation from a Ford dealership/mechanic to clearly stipulate from their reference material what the codes on a DE should be. That done, also give the references from MX-3.com, Probetalk, MX6.com all with links to specific posts that address engine identification. All of this data should be overwhelmingly sufficient to squash their rebuttle. Let's face it, they're scammers. BTW, you didn't mention who they were and it may be beneficial for BB members to be aware of this organization's dealings. Was it Tiger Japanese and where the heck was Mikey and Uday when all of this was going down? For future prospective buyers it's best to take pics of the selected engine - head codes, serial #'s, etc , then show those pics to the venders so as to confirm them before leaving so that it would be pretty hard for them to pull a switheroo later on. Don't let them get away with this IAN.

Take pics of the engine in front of a mazda tech.. get written documentation from the tech saying that the engine is indeed a DE. Then take the proof along with the car back to the people that installed it. Tell them to either refund your cash or put in the right engine or you will pull out your cell phone and call the police on the spot and they can explain to the police why a certified Mazda technician disagrees with the engine that they installed. Personally.. it sounds very much like these guys are attempting to rip you off and they will stone wall you as long as they can. I would be hesitant to allow them to touch your car again (if it was my car they sure as hell wouldnt) Make sure you keep your receipt. A better course of action might be to gather up the proof.. report them to the police and then contact a lawyer and maybe even have the lawyer present when you confront them with the proof that the engine they installed is not the engine you paid for. Whatever you do.. stick to your guns.. involve the law and threaten to take them to court. If they dont admit they messed up.. take them to court.. and get your money back. But at this point.. I really have to stress not to let them touch your car again. You have heard the stories of how people spit in fast food items if you piss them off.. well.. same principle applies here. Would suck if you got them to swap out engines only to find that they sabotaged your ZE to get back at you. If the courts mandate that they have to replace the engine.. pick the engine you want and pick it up yourself and take it elsewhere to be installed. And remember.. just because your paranoid doesnt mean they arent out to get you. Trust me man.. I just got done being screwed by a used engine seller and they dont give a shat about you or your car in the slightest.. all they care about is getting their cash and keeping it. I hope your adventure turns out better than mine did. Best of luck

Check the stamp on the back of the engine..it should say ze.. check out the cams..valve covers are easy to take out. I was sold a "de" and got a kfze..the only reason i kept it its because it os SUPER clean..next to new and I was sick of the k8..ill get a ze in the following years. Anywho... IT HAS to have the ZE stamp.. the k8 says K8 (right where the power steering pump sits on the back... the kfze states KF in bold letters...I have yet to see the de stamp.. I assume it reads DE...?

No. The block will say KL. A klze and klde use the same block so you cant tell by that. I have read on here that there is a ze that used the same stamping on the heads as a de but theat they were actually different. The most reliable way right now for you to tell if it is a ze is if it has high compression pistons. Do a search and you will find out how to tell.

Hey John John,
I had my brother check my motor as well and it turns out I have KL-101 so it would seem I have been dooped as well. But need to do some more checking around cause me aint to happy if I got slammed with a DE and not ZE.

Ian,
Once I get back maybe you and I will make a trip down to the shop and have a little word with them and find out what's going on. If they are going to be stuck up about it...then we take it up a notch.
Cause like you I saw the correct motor prior to getting it installed so I am wondering why when I had my brother check and they turned out to be KL-101.
On the other hand do you think a KLDE would be able to keep up with a LS-VTEC and beat a B18????
