driver side power window sticking

on my 92 mx3 the driver side powerwindow won't go down more than 3-4 inches from the top. when it gets to this point, it makes a gear-grinding/slipping sound so i back off the switch to keep it from getting worse or permanently stuck 4 inches open. when i close the window, it makes the same grinding/slipping noise when its at the top and fully closed until i let off the button as well..

does this sound like something i could fix myself? the window used to just slow down while closeing when it got to that critical 4 inch mark and then eventually close all the way up. now its like it just got tired of struggling at that point in the process and gave out...

Thanks in advance

Try lubricating the window guides with some lithium grease. Careful not to get the grease on the outside of the guides, it is white and is hard to remove. However, it is a long lasting grease that will allow the window to move more easily if that is the problem. You might also need a new window motor and regulaor, but try the grease first since it is so much easier and cheaper.

on second thought if the window is stuck lithium grease will not slide dow nthe guide and lubricate it where it is sticking. You'll need the window all the way down to lubricate it with lithium. Try WD40 first, it will penetrate where the window is sitting in the guides so that it will move.

I scammed some Mazda silicone spray to lube the track/runners and lube it once a year. I saturate the runners until it oozes out of the door drain holes. Lithium works great too, but I find it thickens up in the winter.

the lube idea sounds good but what about the grinding sound when the window is all the way up? the passenger side window doesn't do that and the driver side window didn't used to do that until just about 3 weeks ago. it's like some gear (probably plastic) is slipping when the window hits the resistance of the top of the door frame and the sticking spot about 4 inches down from the top...

just 'feels' like something is about to totally give where i soon won't even have the 4 inch open/close range that i do now...

thanks for any feedback on this.

You might be right, but try lubing it up and see if it still makes that noise. If it does then replace the window motor and regulator.

I have a Driver Power window Regulator if you still need one. I sent you an e-mail.
