im buying it today or tomorrow. 79K miles, $300. Coming from a 93 protege lx. What do I need to do to it before I go and install it? New gaskets? I mean i dont know what I should replace. What about the water pump and alternator? Thanks for any tips.

Since you have the motor out already, on the ground, very accessable I would probably do the 60,000-100,000 Mile Schedualed Maint. Timing belt, water pump, full tune up and maybe even a new distributor, but at least a cap and rotor. Check your manual- it's very early and I can't quite remember everything they reccomend changing out at that mileage. But it's a thousand times easier to check it now then later when the motor is in the car... I'm still trying to convince myself to do my first timing belt... at almost 110,000

wtf were you thinking getting BOSHE platinum +4 for a mazda car... i mean i didn't really look into your info, but i would assume that the car doesn't have that many igition mods, and other things done to it.... not only is boshe just a POS brand, but you should be running NGK's of sum sort probley not platinum... just a question, did you ask for them or were they offered to you? and where did you get them?

I too have bosch platinum 4's in my car. They were reccomended to me by the auto parts store. I have seen no noticable difference, they were a waste of money, but I don't care cause i'm gettin a Bp soon.

stuff you should always replace:
thermostat
thermostat gasket
valve cover gasket
spark plugs
oil & filter
(if you remove exhaust manifold) exhaust gasket
(if u remove intake mani) intake mani gasket
(if u remove throttle body) throttle body gasket
Stuff that is a really good idea to replace:
timing belt
water pump (replace both of these at same time since the pump is right under the belt)
accessory belts
clutch (if urs is worn)
trans fluid
Stuff I have heard u should change but I dono't see the point:
oil pump
head gasket (why are you removing the head?)
valve seals (unless ur rebuilding the motor, why?
piston rings (same as above...why?!!)
Oil pump may seem like a brilliant idea but I've seen way too many aftermarket oil pumps FAIL TO WORK ON STARTUP causing the whole motor to seize in a matter of 2 minutes running time. IMO its not worth the risk to rpelace it. Every used engine, regardless of mileage i've seen....has had working oil pumps. If you do get one, don't get some shitty generic brand & make absolutely sure you install it properly w/the pickup tube in place.

oh ya, and obviously you wanna replace the oil pan gasket if u remove it for whatever reason. I replaced mine just b/c I didn't want any chance of oil leaks.
Radiaotr hoses are a good idea too if yours are cracked. I replaced my bottom one b/c it was corroded.

valve seals (unless ur rebuilding the motor, why?)
I can offer an explanation for why this wouldnt be a bad idea..
When you are buying a used engine.. you dont know its maintenance history as a certainty. If, when you remove the valve cover, you find the head to be a Golden color (as you have mentioned before Gro), the valve seals will likely be fine in a lower mileage engine. If the head is brown or blackish.. likely the oil changes were infrequent at best. Valve seals NEED fresh clean oil to remain soft and pliable in order to do their job properly. Especially the exaust valve seals. If the seals harden, they will start to allow oil to get past them and the oil can coke up on the valve stems & valve lip. This can eventually result in a burned exaust valve(s) as well as having the engine blow blue smoke at startup and when shifting as it consumes more oil than it should. Just my two cents..
