Just wanted to confirm some things. If someone has the JDM BPT, BP non-turbo parts should be useable on it right? So if you wanted any aftermarket parts like flywheels, pullys, cams, or gears you would be searching as if you had a 90-94 Protege right? That goes the same for regular OEM Protege BP parts like manifolds or whatnot that might be defective on your BPT as well?

Just to expand on this questions for those in the know, there are other engines to look at as well isnt there? Like the 94-01 1.8L Miata? And I thought there were some others.

It does make a huge difference when looking for performance parts to have this information so any help is appreciated.

Interesting, but yeah that makes sense. The market for Miata stuff is a lot larger than Protege. What kind of prts would be useable from a Miata in the BPT? Same stuff as above I'm guessing?

Honestly don't know. I was asking the questions. I know that there are Miata parts that work and that the Miata has some form of the BP engine, but I don't know the specifics nor the years.

I think it is the 94-98 Miata but could go up as high as 01, but we need conformation on this as I am not 100%. So believe me I am glad you asked the question becuase I want to know myself.

The BP in the Protege/EGT is the same block as the Miata, with a few parts that actually interchange.

94-97 head/cams/block are pretty much the same. The manifolds, point the wrong way, but will bolt on. Oil pan wont b/c its designed longitudally for oil to gather at the back under acceleration, where as the FWD BP oil pan has oil gather on the side of the pan. Yeah they swap, but I have read that they are not of the correct design to interchange.

The 99 miata valve train is actually sought after by most BP owners b/c mazda used a solid lifters (ditching the HLA's) which swap in. You will need the appropriate shims and you will have to adjust them accordingly.

The 01 and up miata (might be 00, or 02, cant remember at the moment) uses a vvt system that is non-existent on earlier BP's. More trouble than the work you will put into it.

There was no miata made in 1998.

No problem. I have been a long standing member @ the clubprotege board, and I recently picked up an MX-3.... kinda starting over with the knowledge, but its all relevant......

90-94 Protege LX (GT in CAD modelsand up to 95)
90-96 Escort GT (EGT)
90-95ish (some close year to the EGT) Mercurt Tracer LTS <~ some trim model like that
94-97 miata
95-98 Protege ES

all got the BP in some form.

The first 3 interchange much more parts than the latter 2.
