HELP - It keeps popping out of 5th gear

Okay here's the story: The car is a 92 GS and when travelling down the highway it keeps popping out of fifth gear. There is no loud noise or anything but it just won't stay in that one gear. I put it into 5th on a side street not travelling highway speeds and it did not pop out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is mazda's little tattle tell saying you need to put gear oil in your tranny, its easy to do, remove the screw that holds the speedo gear in place, pull speedo gear, add oil, return speedo gear, screw back in place.

I wish the dude who owned my GS before knew that. He took it to a tranny shop and paid $$$$ to get it "fixed" the first time. I was popping out some when I bought it, and no more than 1 month later, 5th died altogether...

Hey Mnemonic do you think you could explain that in laymans terms. I don't know squat about cars, all I know is to bring it to my uncle who does all the work. If you could tell me again keeping in mind that I have to tell my uncle what he is looking for. Thanks in advance and it is very much appreciated.

It could be that your synchros are finished too. They are what keep your gear "in gear". $$$$ to fix...

If you live in the US and a warm climate it is not unusual for the 5th gear syncro to become damaged. This has to do with Mazda USA spec'd Dextron as the fluid in the MTX where Mazda's corporate specs say Dextron is only to be used below the 0C (32F) What happens is the syncro wears and brass chips jam the detent that holds the shifter fork for 5th gear in position and with the rotational torque of the shaft can cause 5th gear to not engage or pop out of gear. You heard of the happening a lot the mid to late 90's. The good thing is 5th gear is externally mounted and can be fixed without dropping the tranny. Total labor can be as little as 1 hour.

Yup thats a worn shift fork and it can be fixed relatively easily without dropping the tranny.
Most common cause is resting your hand on the shifter when its in gear.
I have the parts needed to fix this that I can sell, let me know.
