1.6 SOHC ... performance questions...

What is the difference from the engine I have and the B6T? Maybe the head, intake and exhaust manifold? Maybe compression? or is it pretty much the same engine?

Another question... the 1.6 DOHC, how much power does it have compared to the SOHC, and is it possible to do a head swap and put a DOHC head on the SOHC engine?

Thanks in advance. Btw, new here as far as posting, but I've been reading this site for a month or so-- ever since I got my mx-3 :-D

And yes my car is slow, but considering it's a 1.6, I'm proud of it... still I want it faster :D lol.

Nothing is the same about them, besides that they are both 1.6L and made by Mazda.
Another question... the 1.6 DOHC, how much power does it have compared to the SOHC,
DOHC = 105 hp
SOHC = 88hp
and is it possible to do a head swap and put a DOHC head on the SOHC engine?
NO.

Racingmazda.com makes a bolt on turbo kit... you may be interested in checking that out!

However, the BP swap is pretty easy and straightforward. Not to mention, the BP is such a better platform to begin with anyway.

you didn't get the shitty one!! the SOHC gets good Gas millage and has more pep at the lower RPM,s and thats good for every day driving!

Bolt on turbo kit = 15% increase in power over stock? that's like 13hp... For $2k? rofl... I think the BP swap looks cost effective... A little difficult maybe for me, but I can always ask questions.. now the only other two problems are getting the money up, and having something to drive while I do swaps... :/ Wonderful...

Or maybe i can custom fab a turbo kit? o_O lol. I don't know, it'd just be funny to fly by a mustang (which is a popular car down here in florida... Apparently, if you drive a mustang that means you are automatically fast, but you must pick on little 1.6 liter Mazda's and honda's..) and then tell them they got outrun by a 1.6 :D

The SOHC also responds better to tuning mods. I currently have a (8V) 1.6 SOHC that I have added a few low cost mods all made from scrap material I basically got for free. I can get dyno time afterhours at a friend test lab so just to see what I had at the wheels we did a couple pull with my car. throwing out the highest and lowest pulls, my average was 89.9whp or about 107-110hp at the crank. This is with a clutch with 280k km of city driving and the orignal cat. If the engine was a little fresher I would crack the head and clean up the air flow a little. On a previous I traded a little of the bottom end torque for top end Hp by moving the peak torque RPM up the curve by 1000rpm which gave me 103whp at 5000rpm.

Ditch the motor as it's purpose wasn't power. You should be able to work out more than 13% with a turbo, but even 50% more and it would still be from 80 to 120whp. The one BP we had was right around that mark no turbo on the dyno.

I'm disgruntled though... there's a bit of snow on the roads here, got my fancy snow tires, and I still can't spin them in 2nd even with the snow.

I was able to get a respectable 175 hp at the wheels on a stock 120,000 mile longblock with forced induction, there is potential in the engine, just have to develope it. Too many dismiss it as a poor design, it is not, just needs to be enhanced with better a better intake and exhaust. First place to find extra power is to construct a better exhaust manifold, if you have ever taken a good look at the stock manifold (internally) then you will understand what I mean.

Just because the engine left the factory with 88 hp doesn't mean that's all it can possibly make, it just means that's all the power Mazda wanted it to make, for whatever reasons (mileage, sound/vibration/harshness control, engine smoothness, etc).

Alright.. So with some simple bolt on stuff I'll get a little pep out of the motor... Sounds fun. And btw I've barked my tires shifting to second plenty of times... and when it's rainy, I can spin my tires all the way till about 35mph... which means my rims and tires suck.. lol. but that's besides the point. :P Thanks to all who responded. I'll order the CAI and play around with the exhaust a little when I get some extra change.

Go for the BP swap. It is way easy if you have the SOHC engine cause all you need to do is plug and play everything except for running two wires to the ECU.

One of my old Swifts ran 193whp at 11.5psi out of 1.3 dohc 4 cylinder with good power curve. The head design was decent, minus valves and ports were not meant for over double the power. Some extensive port and valve work was required to make the exhaust valves live longer than a year or two with the increase of hot mass air past the valves.

As for sohc, I haven't seen the sohc apart, although I imagine ports and valves are smaller than the BP. The BP has very nice looking ports, good valve size, and I can probably gaurantee that running 175whp on a completely stock sohc will present more long term driveability problems than 175whp on a stock BP.

I'm not saying you can't pick an engine and make it fast, but the BP has easier and more potential. As has been pointed out, it's also very simple to swap and probably cheaper than a rebuild on a sohc. Everybody has a different dream though...

Ok this is a tad off topic, well sorta only not... uh ok..

Does someone have polyurethane motor mounts for our cars or what? cause the stock ones seem kind of crappy... that or mine are just shot, but usually stock ones are mushy.

And I remember when I used to have a Dodge neon, some guy had sprayed some type of silicon stuff (or something) on his motormounts that stiffened them up quite a bit.. (this was done before mount inserts were made for the neon) Any idea what could have been sprayed on there?
