Running hotter after new water pump

Post by wgale »

I just replaced my water pump and it appears to be running just a bit warmer and the cooling fan is kicking on more and staying on longer. The coolant level is right to the top and holding, so there are no leaks. I did notice that the replacement pump I got had a slightly different impeller, but I don't think that should make a difference. The new one has thicker and shorter blades and the original one had thinner and longer stainless steel blades. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

how long has it been since its been installed? I noticed with my new pump that it was pretty hard to turn out of the box, but after removing it after redoing the timing belt (it slipped b/c of the tbt) I noticed it was way easier to turn.

I never had any overheating problems or noticed any hikes in the heat guage though, but the stock heat gauge is pretty inaccurate anyways (within 40 degree's of what it actually is).

I'd say give it a little more time. If it doesn't improve, replace it (if thats an option) or live with it if it isn't that huge a deal. You could try shoving some water wetter in there to bring the temp down a few degree's.

Also double-check your level as the system will have a LOT of air in it after replacing the pump. when you refill, it'll come up to the top but after the pump rotates when you start the car, the system will prime & all the airgaps will flow towards the top (where the temp guage is, which also operates the fans....hence why they stay on forever & your guage goes up).

I recently replaced my water pump and observed the same thing
you did. The old pump had stainless steel blades and the replacement
pump had cast blades. I didn't notice any change in running temp from the difference. All I can think of might be the concentration of antifreeze to water, to much of one and not enough of the other will slightly effect the running temp. And definatly make sure theres no air in the system.

did you replace your t-stat at the same time??? If not, could be a shot in the dark??

My wife's infiniti would over heat every once in while.....I replaced the t-stat, never again has it happened.......

Thanks guys... It has been a week and it still occurs consistently. The temp gauge is only higher by maybe a mm or 2. The main thing I noticed was the cooling fan kicking on longer and more often. Prior to the replacement, it rarely came on this time of year. I guess I'll try replacing the thermostat as the level is holding. I used a 50/50 antifreeze mix, so that shouldn't be the problem. What is this "wetter" additive that you are referring to? Have you had success with it?

redline water wetter. Its an additive...its like a pink/red color and comes in 12 oz bottles which treat up to like 10 gallons of coolant.

Its just an additive that helps the coolant work better at transfering heat. I've read that it can lower your temp by at least 8 degrees F and up to 30 in some cars. most cars will see at least a 10 degree drop in temp. you might notice a slight difference. Its worth the $7 IMO
