can someone please tell me the benefit to CF hoods?

okay now i know the CF hoods would be a little bit lighter which in theory would add a fraction of a hp, but seriously, what's the big draw to CF hoods, and CF in general... i see it so much now i think it's so tired and played out (forget the fact it was ugly the first time i saw it), reminds me of honda's whenever i see CF....

just like people bash the chrome altezza look now, people will get sick of the CF look soon too and abandon ship for the next GREAT THING... i personally think the more "classic" look is nicer because it's timeless and it'll never end up bein' "rice" i know probably 99% people disagree w/ me, but hey.... what're ya gonna do?

bragging rights mostly im sure. ya i know what you mean though how it will eventually become same old same old. personally i find cf hoods tacky when they are on a car that isnt black or very dark. it just stands out way too much and gives off a "Look At Me! Look At Me!" vibe to it. my 2 cents.

well they're not just a "little bit lighter".. the stock hood is over 40lbs, and the CF one is like 11lbs. thats huge!! and it's also about style. :P i love the look of carbon fiber on any part of the car lol

i agrww with sam on this one. weight with a capital W. If anyone makes a fiberglass version, i'd personally go for that instead..

I agree, what is up with CF hoods.
Its not like they are 100Ibs lighter than stock hoods so why even buy one?

for high performance, yeah i get it since every little bit of weight lost helps the car go faster in the end, but if all you're really doing is show (like i intened to eventually) then i really don't think it's worth it other than the fact that it's even harder to find fiberglass hoods than it is to find cf ones. i know that if i could get an invader style hood for mine that wasn't cf i'd be all for it, but i don't want to shell out for something fancy that i'd want to paint over anyways.

Re CF hoods and saving weight, besides some decent weight reduction, it is WHERE it is saved from, the front of the car which is overly heavy compared to the rear since it's FWD. Worth all the bucks spent? Matter of personal preference and funds...

for me getting the hood had many advantages:
1: bought the car with a messed up hood so needed a replacement
2: cost around $350 total, no painting so no real price difference between that and a stock hood
3: weighs about 30 pounds less than my stock hood did
4: my plans were a black and white colored car and that adds to it, all of my cars accent pieces will be carbon fiber (hood / whiper cowl / hatch garnish)
5: any loss of weight will be helpful since i'm doing an awd conversion later.. so 30 pounds here / 20 pounds there / and so on will be helpful

not everyone likes carbon fiber... some think its ugly some think it looks nice...
... some people think we should eat me... has that stopped me from grilling a steak any time i want yet? nope

Im getting mine for looks..why well because i got a k8 LOL no seriously... not everyone has carbon fiber hoods..not even most of the rcers can afford one. Yeah yeah it is just for looks but well theres only like 2 mx3s in my town that have a cf hood in el paso tx. My friend the one im buying the black one from..he has a red one WOAH now now woah I had never seen a red one here before. So yea just for looks. Besides my stock hood is extremelly ugly all cracked paint and so on.

I got it for some pretty standard reasons:

1: weight
2: help cooling the engine compartment
3: looks

not to forget, I`m the only one in Norway (and the third in entire Europe I think) to get this.
I`ve modified a lot, so this was just the next step.

I never used to like cf hoods. mainly all I saw them on were white cars(hondas and acuras), which looks gross. Then one day I saw a black car with a cf hood, and I almost missed it. It brought a nice, clean, sleek look to the car, not gaudy because there was no huge transition. I bought mine for my black mx totally for looks, and the fact that you hardly see a done out mx-3(mainly because hondas are cheap and easy to find parts for) makes the hood that much cooler when someone notices the subtle cf hood that you have spent so much time trying to find, and save up for. Also when u only have 88 hp pushing a car with a sub-wall made from 2 sheets of 3/4" mdf, every little shaving of wheight helps. I don't think that the stock hood actually weighs as much as some think, but the cf hood is defenatly a few pounds lighter.

but i find the people who find it soooooooo important to make their car SO LIGHT, that they are the same people who are so quick to throw two 12" subs, and big fat wood enclusore, a huge amp, bigger speakers, all the wiring and so forth... just don't get it

i think you'll find that most of the mx-3 guys in here that are trying to make their car lighter aren't adding in huge sub box's and tons of extra wiring..

LOL i have two 12" subs, etc.. so ok, for me it would be a lot for looks. but think about it.. lighter hood + heavy subs in back = crazy weight distribution  haha jk i just love how cf looks when the sun hits it, and how it contrasts with the different color of your car (or with a black car)
