Strange Stereo / Din Setup??

Hi,

I can't reference to it anywhere, but is it just my 1997 MX-3 or why is there a 1/2 din, then my 1 din stereo, then a further 1 1/2 din space? What is the point of having the 1/2 din at the top then having the stereo?
