MX3 newb winter tire question

Post by Karandras69 »

Hey all, first post and a newbish one too. I don't know much about cars and this is my girlfriend's car.

Being in Edmonton Canada and just getting like 20-30cm of snow in one day and I'm sliding all over the place and don't want my girlfriend to do it (my car is a hunk-o-junk and her's is nice ;-) )

I need to know what the best winter tires would be for the cheapest price. I was reading old posts about winter tires but none of them answer the question that I ask. I noticed that some people are lowering the tire size to 14s, she has stock rims on the car and summer tires that are getting thin but will last another year if we get some winters on there.

Me -> ;)

I got those blizzak tires. And they kick arse!!! I had them in snow, ice, and -30 weather, then they still made the car grip.
Bought them a while ago, I think they were $600 for all four on the 14inch stock rims.

(but watch out, when It's warm outside, don't spin the tires or they will wear out right quick!!!)

Yeah, not too sure how much she is willing to spend, but how much is safety worth?

I've been told about this company -> http://www.nokiantires.com, heard of them? Any good? Cheap?

It says these would work best -> http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/tires_popup.cfm?id=2&size=185/65R14

Aren't Blizzaks really expensive? I would go with those cause I hear nothing but great things about them.

I've had Blizzaks (few types), Good-year, studs, some other noname garbage, and the Hakkapalettitas.

I by far prefer the ones I can't spell. The Blizzaks only have the really good 'rubber' for the first half of the tread so you are happy and tell all your friends. After that, they turn more into an all-season (unless they've changed in the past couple of years). The goodyears aren't bad (forget the name).... have lasted the longest above the bunch. The grooves seem to be set to pick up every rock on the road though.

The Nokians.... mmmmmmm. By far the best. Same tread all the way through from what I recall, and had better results on ice than any of the others. I worked on rally pit crews before and I recall there being only Nokians with those guys as well (shaved mind you).

If you have the money, and can find them... definetely the hakks.
