I have a 1.8 Automatic which I am considering upgrading in the near future to a 2.5 MX-6. Before that happens I wish to upgrade to a manual transmission. Could one of you guru's out there please inform me of the parts that I should source to enable me to complete this swap. Also would it be wiser to upgrade to a MX-6 tranny instead of the MX-3.
Many Thanks
Sean

this isnt going to be pretty. My friend Daniel put a manual GS tranny in an automatic GS. Took him 4 days. He had to rewire lots of things. The Autos have basically two ECUs in a sense. the ECU and the ATCU. One is for the computer, the other is for the tranny. They are wired together, so you cant just UNPLUG the ATCU.
You will need the shifter, the linkage, the tranny, pedals, and the neutral saftey switch, which will have to be wired in. There may be more parts, thats just all I can think of.
Be forewarned this is going to be a difficult task. I hope you have a the shop manual and electronic wiring diagrams handy.
[ November 13, 2002: Message edited by: Custommx3 ]

Basically don't attempt doing it yourself if you have no idea what you are doing because its not a simple task.
I would try to locate all or most the parts yourself and then get a tranny shop to do it for you.

I would suggest selling your auto and picking up a manual, it would probably save you some money.

The small garage I currently work at in Garnett SC, can do a ATX-MTX swap on a Probe GT, (with everything working perfectly), in about 13 hours and a few hundred bux. If anybody would like to bring their MX-3 here to get it done, let me know via email.

How much would it cost?? It sounds like you already have everything. How much did all that stuff cost ? There is your answer.
No really, the Auto-Manual swap is not too difficult. In my 4-cyl, we did mine when we did my BP swap. I have no clue what Barry is talking about with the double ECU thing. I never saw that on mine.
I had to swap in the following:
Manual ECU (BP)
Manual Wiring Harness (BP)[THIS made the swap EASY!! PLUG AND PLAY!!]
Master cylinder
Slave cylinder
Brake Booster
Tranny (clutch,flywheel, Throw-Out Bearing.. duh)
Clutchline
Axles
Tranny mounts
Pedal assembly
shifter
shift rods
The Neutral safety switch was a different story. We did not hook mine up, nor did we hook up my reverse switch. These little jokers connect to the DASH harness and go thru the firewall and up into the ignition and crap.
We DID, however, have to loop the neutral safety switch on the harness side so the car would crank. You just have to be careful to MAKE SURE the car is in Neutral everytime you start it or you will F-up your flywheel/starter.
Here are some pic of the neutral bypass trick:

I am sure it is possible to hardwire the reverse & neutral switch, and if anyone has the direcions, I am all ears.
However, this will get you up and running!

of course you didn't have to mess with the tranny computer, you don't use it when you go to MTX.

you could remove it to lose like a quarter of a pound thou, lol. c'mon guys, somebody post on my 2.5L ATX swap thread... if I don't hear anything by tomorrow, part of a Probe wiring harness goes in, cause there's no way in hell it will just plug up. (and for whoever it was that said you didn't have to change any mounts IF using an MX-6 tranny, you don't know what you're talkin about either, haha)
