timing belt troubles

Recently I got my timing belt changed on my 92 MX-3. Needless to say the old one was in perfect condition even after 170,000km. Anyway, since I got it done my motor has started pinging on hills and between 3500 & 4000 rpm. I asked the mechanic if he was sure that he got the belt on right. He said if the belt was even one tooth out of whack, the motor would misfire like crazy. He suggested it was all in my head....hmm!<BR>Anyone got any ideas on this, could he have screwed up my valve timing ?
