I have a large grinding noise in my front end... It sounds like a wash machine or drier with a ball bearing in it but it is a grinding metatlic sound. It is not a constant grinding but almost like you have a card on a wheel and the only time it grinds is when that card hits a certain spot! It is getting louder as I drive it now... when I turn left it is VERY loud and when I turn right it almost goes away but not completely! I don't know if it is a wheel bearing or a cv joint or maber a bearing in the driveshaft... I don't know. I just had the bearings and the brakes checked 2 months ago and everything looked over. It wasn't as loud then as it is now and my mechanic was confused just as I am. Does any one have a clue??? Can someone help me?????

Not positive on this but I think your front brakes have a circular metal shroud behind each disc to help protect against road debris entering the disc surface area. Pull the front wheels and check to be sure the shroud/shield has enough clearance so it isn't making contact with the disc when the wheels are rotating. I believe others have had this happen as well and I had it happen on another car of mine.

Things to do:
check frt brakes AGAIN
check wheel bearings AGAIN (they could be tight but debris might be trapped in there)
check the fluid level/cleanliness of tranny fluid
when you go on a short drive, immediatly feel the wheel that you suspect it the problem(careful though could be really hot), if it is considerably warmer than the other side, there is some definate metal to metal contact in the hub assembly somewhere. good luck at finding your problem.
also check out another shops opinion, the first may overlook something.(it happens sometimes)

The wheels do not get hot at all even after an hour drive. I checked yesterday!! I already bent the metal brake shields in a few months ago thinking the same thing. All fluids are topped and the tranny fluid is topped but I would have to drain it to check it, the shifting is good there is no play or slipping at all.
???????

The left or drivers side ball joint is definatly shot... I looked at it today. could this be the noise??? It doesn't realy fit the description of the noise though....
