there is no way to tell from just looking at them.... the only thing to see is if there is visible oil leaking...but otherwise, you cannot tell until you have them on the car.

If it's 100% out of control and bouncing like you say, something's broke, but it could be anything, not just the strut. Get it jacked up (leave the wheel on) and crawl underneath while somebody man-handles the wheel - trying to move it in, out, forward, backward. If the problem is that bad, you're likely to find what's broke.
