Intake Manifold Design

Does any one have any links to books, board posts, etc... containing good info on Intake Manifold Desgin, physics, flow bench data, etc...???

My car is quickly becoming a hybrid from he!!... I was just going to use the Miata Intake Manifold...but I don't feel like hacking it up to make it work and I got a LOT of sheet metal from work....FREEBIE!!! That and my 75mm Mustang Throttle body nearly swallows it!!! :freak: Right now I'm planing on designing the plenum to the same specs as a friend of mines AWD Talon (he lazily granny shifted a 11sec. pass). However I'm planning on using longer runners than his (his are 5 1/2" long). I'm thinking about starting with 8" long runners (stock miata is 9" on ID of bend and 12" on OD of bend). Then if the car falls of on the top of the power band (and boost is rock solid) then I'll shorten them till I get it matched to the power band. What do you all think? :welder:

75mm throttle body? Isnt that way too much for our V6 MX3s?
I hear people with V6 Mustangs only put like 60mm throttle bodies and people with V8s put 70mm throttle bodies. I dont know much about throttle bodies but I am betting a 75mm throttle body is too much for our cars.
Anyway, if you do make a manifold test it on the KLZE engines and the K8s. Than make copies of them and sell them.

Actually it isn't going on a V6...it is going on a built 1.6L B6T 4cyl which I'm building a custom turbo manifold for also (it is Stainless). The car will be capable of 500+ HP to the wheels on the turbo alone...... I'm planning on spraying a 150HP shot of nitrous on top of that. It will give me a power to weight ratio good enough to push high 8 sec. quarter mile passes. Shade and I are trying to get a tuning shop going here in VA. This will be one of our demo cars. Hopefully we can pick up some sponsors this coming season.

P.S.

I'll be running the NOPI Street class and the car is still FWD. :freak:

IIRC there was a chapter in Corky Bells's maximum boost book that talked about it

iv got a mustange tb for my custom aluminum manifold w/ direct port NOS. im not putting it all on till the new year when i get the stand alone. but from what i understand is the larger the TB the more erratic the idle, but when youru on it it goes. its only the idle thats really efficted. and in a drag car you dont really plan on sitting in traffic. :)
i bought the manafold off of boostedmx
http://www.mx-3.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=007562

it will be awsome when i get it all on.

There should not be a need for a 75mm TB, it's way too big. It will just make off idle response on or off and suck for driveability. You will get better overall results with something properly sized. 2JZ supra uses a 60mm and can flow around 600CFM of air without being a major restriction.

Building an intake manifold takes tons of work and usually a lot of trial and error to get it right. You can probably find more information online about aspects to be concerned with when building intake manifold than in Corkys book. He may still have a couple of simple forumlas, but you need more than that. His book is still good for someone who doesn't know enough about turbo fundamentals.

If I had some more time, I'd probably find some sites for you as I know I've come accross a couple of good ones in the past. Good luck on the mani though...

Not to hijack this thread but I got a question
Would a 60mm throttle body work good with a turbocharged 2.5L KLZE? Or should I got for a 65mm?

Good link nos! As for a the 75mm ... it isn't to big for my application. I have a daily driver...N/A RX-7 (I've got a GT32 for it heheheee). The MX-3 will go down the street, not very fun unless your slammin gears and 2-steping it off the line. The main purpose for the MX-3 is for the strip. The turbo I'm using is dual ball bearing and can flow up to 50lbs/min at around 30psi. The car w/ turbo and nitrous will be capable of 650+WHP. If I pick up sponsors I'll be changing the fuel system to methanol, going to a bigger turbo and possibly tube frameing it to run the Pro Class. If the sponsors come into play expect to see 1000+HP. Currently I have 3 Engines, 2 Trannies, and 2 sets of axles. And if the turbo don't wanna spool I'll spray down low too! Thank you all for your support and if any of you come across some good links, please pass them my way. :freak:

i say go to the 75mm. thats exactly what ill be running. youv got the same idea as i. by next summer i should be throwing down somewhere around 500. im hitting around 250 now with 8psi, on a vj14. if all goes well im going tube frame and rwd next spring. good luck and throw in the 75mm. it sounds like its not a daly driver.

You Guys amaze me! I hope after i get done with School and get a job I can manage to do something like this. I hope the rearwheel thing works out Josh. Sounded like a good idea going with the 2nd gen Rx-7.

Its people like you guys who are giving the MX3s a good name!
Good job
Do you guys have any pics of your beasts?
This goes to the guy who is planning to run 500hp and the other guy talking about having a sponser to run 1000hp...
