Rim Size/Pattern

Ok I have searched before and am quite confused. Im new to the car scene and wondering what the hell our bolt pattern is. Im pretty sure it is 4x100 but just wanted to make sure before I go buy some rims. Also what does the offset mean in rims such as a 42 offset? What is the recommended size for our mx-3's for 17s? 205/40/17? Any help would be appreciated! thanx
