hey all, (hope this is the right place to post)
I am looking towards purchasing a boost controller and turbo timer very soon. I was wondering if fellow turboed mx'ers could share what they are using and their opinions and inputs on either turbo timers or boost controllers?<p>Right now for a boost controller im leaning towards the TurboXS dual stage boost controller, for the fact i can have 2 preset psi levels, one for daily driving and one for racing/track/FUN

if you've got the $ go with the Apexi AVC-R. thats what i'm(was) using and it worked wonderfully. the only draw back is that the solenoid clicks when regulating boost but i didnt hear it to often because the motor drowned out most other noises.
i installed an HKS timer in a WRX and with the harness it was a snap. with out a harness i can see how it could be tricky. personally i like the slim design of the Apex'i unit.

I'd recommend not going with any Turbo XS products! All the guys at ET Motorsports HATE them with a passion cuz of thier cheap designs and they have had LOTS of problems with Turbo XS products in the past so they don't deal with them any more. Personally the only TXS product I've used was the Type H-34 Racing Bypass valve. It worked pretty good for about a year untill the cheap rubber seal on the piston dryed out then the BLOV wouldn't vent, it just beat itself to death! All you would here is dadadada, instead of WOOOOOOOOOSH. I used WD-40 on it to rejuvinate it, ET Motorsports said ALOT of people have had to do this. When testing the vacuum chamber with my mighty vac it didn't hold vacuum but for a second, the needle just briskly from 25Hg to 0Hg.<p>Here are my recommendations:<p>HKS Turbo Timer Type 1:
I got mine for $99.60 from ET Motorsports. It offers TONS of features for the price! You will have to by the RPM signal converter to convert the 12v analog RPM signal to the 5v digital signal the timer needs or you will fry it! The convert is an HKS product about $55. If you have a manual speedo instead of electronic then you'll also have to get a Autometer sending unit that converts the cable signal to an electronic speedo signal for about $80. The timer can be used with out them but then you wouldn't be able to use the timers additional features like displaying; Speed, RPM, 60 foot times, 1/8th mile times, 1/4 mile times, etc... Currently I'm in the process of installing mine.<p>HKS SSQV:
This is supposed to be awsome, thats all I've hear except from only 1 source out of about 20-30 others! It is IMPOSSIBLE for it to leak due to the use of a pull type relief valve instead of the standard push style valve all others use. Mine should be in my hands this evening and on by this weekend. Not only does every one I talk to say it works GREAT but they say it also sounds AWSOME! You can get one for around $210 then you have a couple of installation options. You could go with a universal aluminum pipe with can be installed into your existing IC pipes for about $88. The cheaper options are to get the weld on mounting flanges. The aluminum one is around $25? The steel one is around $55 and is what I'm using.<p>HKS EVC EZ II or Full EVC Boost controller:
The HKS EVC EZ II is about $376. It has both high and low boost settings with a CPU controlled ****pit mounted control box and the CPU controlled stepper motor goes in the engine bay. You can then later spend $236 for the fancy HKS EVC display screen and connect it to the EVC EZ II wich will turn it into a FULL EVC. This is the route I'll be taking.

ok, i know this is an old post i started, but im just wondering if JWMotorsports has finished installing the hks turbo timer type1? (i tried PM and emailing). Also the autometer part...is it the hall effect speedometer sender part #5291 ?<p>I just got my hks turbo timer type1 black, us spec

Electronic boost controllers are a major waste of $$. test after test has shown them to work only a very, very small amount better than a manual if at all.<p>You might want to check out the Hallman Evolution. it allows remote adjustment of the boost controller. Check it out here That would give you the ability to adjust the boost on the fly. I've found in real life though you usually set the boost and forget it. You might turn it up at the track. Even that is few and far between.

True a MBC works great but the best advantage that an electronic one can offer is controlled boost spikes and gear selectable boost settings. Very beneficial for the fwd boosted crowd.

Yeah being able to kick in higher boost in 2nd or 3rd gear on up is a good advantage for FWD. You forget that stuff driving a boosted AWD :p <p>You can help cut down on the MBC spiking by keeping the vacuum lines as short as possible. The other thing is to make sure your boost source is right on the compressor outlet- not the intake manifold.
