Turbo w/o Intercooler

What would happen if you didn't install an intercooler with your turbo? will it blow your engine? Thanks

it would overheat cause there isn't anything to lower the temp. so in the long run...it's possible

Well..... If you really think about it, Chevrolet used to put out the 3.8v6 with no intercooler for about four years or so. Never had a problem with it either. Yes it did have a carb. The engine usually ran about 210 degrees. I had a turbo vega with a v6 and had no probs with not having an intercooler. The reason they put turbos in some of those cars is to make up for displacement or engine size. Instead of throwing a v8 in there, they put a turbo 6....you could run a turbo with no intercooler, but if you're going to use the turbo for performance, or run a lot of boost, you should def. have one big enough to keep things cool

Most companies use the turbo to get the best of both worlds. On one hand, you can have a small engine (easy to put into small cars and it also weighs less) which gives you great MPG. Yet at the same time, using a turbo, will give you more power (also does not take up much space...and does not weigh much). So turbocharging a small engine is a better alternative for car makers than using a larger engine.

Having a smaller engine usually gives the car a cheaper insurance rate too...making it appeal more to some buyers...v6's are a lot cheaper than 8's on insurance

The basic idea of an intercooler is to cool the intake temp since when the turbo compresses the air it also heats it. HEAT=BAD=POWERLOSS. By cooling the ambient intake temp it allows you to run a higher boost pressure without causing detonation.

Without the IC, the turbo is limited in power to avoid overheating.<P>It's a common thing to have cars run without an IC. It's veray easy to add even a small one.<P>Makes a HUGE difference in power.<P>RF
