making custom trunk cover
making custom trunk cover
seeing the my trunk cover broke last week, ive decided to build a new one. i took a sheet of cardboard and cut it to the shape of the OEM. next step is to wrap it in fleece, and resin it all. then, make 2 6x9 MDF rings, mount those on there, and baiscally build 6x9 mounting locations. fiberglass it all, sand, bondo, and wrap it in the carpet used for sub boxes.
ne ideas on how to make this work better... or any question n comments welcome

Re: making custom trunk cover
Well, I'm doing the same exact thing execpt I took off the carpet from the OEM one and used shape of it as a mold for my fiberglass. Im also not going to carpet it, but rather dye the final coat of resin black so I can sand/buff to a shine.

Re: making custom trunk cover
Buy resin dye and add it to the mix before applying. This is the first time I've worked with dying it, so I'm not sure how it will turn out, but I can always paint it afterward. ![Shrug ](./images/smilies/shrug.gif)

Re: making custom trunk cover
I'm doing a custom trunk cover that will hold the show the CarPC, i tried to reproduce the end part with the dip for the trunk latch but it looked like *** , so i just cutted it off and put it onto the end of the one i made and fiberglass it together.
I've heard of people just fiberglassing the current cover and put speakers on that...

Re: making custom trunk cover
oh yeah my trunk cover is bent.. falls in all the time.
I'd SO replace it with a CF unit if someone made one and the price was right. even if I had to do a little work and like boltup the pegs off my one one to it, etc..

Re: making custom trunk cover
i thought about seeing how my prototype comes out... then see if i can get marsh to make me one out of CF.. so it will be stronger.
i would mold the 6x9s into the original... but the right side clip/peton thingy they allows it to rotate, isnt workign. when it broke, it crushed the corner, making it as flimsy as the fabric with not board.
2 of my friends with escorts want me to make them a copy of this cover for them as well, lol

Re: making custom trunk cover
Hmmm, I might consider making them out of fiberglass for others when I finish this one, and if you dont mind that is - well fiberglass instead of carbon fiber. They would be OEM shape like mine, not flat...

Re: making custom trunk cover
carbon fiber would look awsome if it had the dips in it like the stock cardboard does. fiberglass would be awsome too, i'd definatly buy one.

heck yes! (seen Napoleon Dynamite yet?)
I'd be in on that too. Actually, I'd love to have a fiberglass replica of the stock so I could paint it to match my interior. Marsh should jump on this!

Re: making custom trunk cover
once im able to get some cash and get mine started, ill throw some pics up... i think its gonna look awesome with 6x9s molded into it, sides, i can mount my amps to the underside and clean the trunk up some. i jus need to get my hands on some of OEM carpet, i might rewrap my box it in also, make everything look all stock.

Re: making custom trunk cover
guys dont whine how you its all gets broken etc. just take it out and reinforce it on the back temporary and then fiberglass top then bottom and cut openings for subs if you want, then bondo imperfections and sand, primer, wet sand primer and then paint color you want, and you got custom one, harder to break and looks better
