directions installing guage faces

Post by mnuckols »

Can anyone give me the instructions to installing the guage faces on a 92? I've searched the forums for previous posts on how EXACTLY you get to the guage cluster and what all needs to be removed first but I couldn't find anything. Kinda new to the mod things so any help would be appreciated! I need to know what screws need to be removed, etc. I've also tried looking at the online shop manual but when I go to instrument cluster and click one of the pages under it it just shows up as black. Thanks in advance!

I think I've seen a page written up on it before. I'll do a little research and let you know.

I did this not that long ago.
I installed Speed hut indiglo guages.
Firstly remove all you dash bits/centre cosol etc so you can get to your dash cluster.
Remove the screws that hold it in and diconnect the wires from the back.
If you can't get to this part let me know but you should be able to..
Installing the guges is pretty easy as long as you are careful..
The speedo and tacho are simple
Remove the srcews holding the old faces on and then slide the new ones over the needle.. There is no need to remove the needle on any of the guages!! You will find that the needle seems to long and you will be tempted to cut the tail of it.. DONT, there is no need.. Carefully push down on the face near the front of the needle, the new face will slide under the needle and give enough space to fit it entirely over the needle..
Replace screws on face..
Check that the needle moves properly as sometimes it gets stuck as there is not enough clearance.. Mine was fine though! id it is rubbing you can apparently sand the bottom of the needle a little to give the required clearance.. I would be carefull doing this though.
You should now have the sppedo and tacho in place.
Now this is the part that people have made alot of mistakes..
Getting the Fuel and temp faces on..
Udo the screws on the face as before, Also undo the screws on the back that hold the guages in place.. I undid them all.. just to make sure..
Now carefully spint the clusters so the needles are pointing in the same diriction eg: / /
Do not move the Needles with your hand, spin the entire cluster from underneath.
As before slide the face plate over and push down at the front so the new face slides between the needle and the old plate.. just be careful it is quite delicate..
Hope this helps.. good luck
When it is all done, wipe your sweat of your brow and put all the screws back in..

Wow I feel so dumb. I can't even get to the guage cluster. I removed the center console where the AC and all is to see if there were any other screws holding me back, but still can't seem to be able to get way back there to the cluster. I try removing the plastic that lines the plastic cluster window but can't. feels like the steering wheel is in the way. Do I need to completely remove it?

:) Its Kewl, O.K.. You need to remove the centre console, 2 screws at the back 2 screws at the join to the middle section.
Then you need to remove the middle section as well.. This will remove all the plastic that runs around you AC/Stereo etc and all the way around your speedo region.. You do not have to revove the steering wheel.. but you may need to remove the plastic part around it..
I am not sure what model car you have as some interiors are significantltly different..
To remove the middle section as aexplained above all I needed to undo is a couple of screws under the stereo, and then a couple under the centre speaker in the dash.. It all just pops off then..
Good luck.. Be specific with what you get stuck on.. No matter what you are having trouble with, someone has been in the exact same position!

I don't mean to contradict what Pipes is saying here (you gave a really good description of this procedure), but if you have a '92 interior, then you won't need to take out the center console to get to the gauges. I'll try to describe it the best I can from memory... I'm at work right now, so of course I have some free time. lol
You'll need to first remove the steering wheel column cover (top piece) by taking out the 3 screws that come up through the bottom piece. Then you'll take out 3 screws at the top of the cluster assembly trim, that hold it into the top part of the dashboard. Now, behind where the column cover was, there should be a rubber flap that hides a couple screws. Remove these. Now just unplug the wiring harnesses for the hazzard light/rear defroster light and the cruise control buttons, and the gauge cluster trim should pull right out.
Once the trim is removed, I believe there are 4 more screws that are in plain view that hold the cluster in place. Once these are removed, then simply unplug the 3 wiring harnesses in the rear and take the whole thing out.
As I said, I'm going from memory, but I think I covered all the places it's connected to the dash. To get to the gauges themselves, just unhook all the plastic clips that hold the outer piece and the clear plastic guard. The gauge installation procedure that Pipes gave is the way to go, although there should not be any need to sand the needles!
Concerning the fuel and temp gauge: when you take out all the screws from the back of the cluster and remove the gauge face, you'll see a silver cylinder connected to the back of the gauge face that you'll want to turn instead of the needle itself. This will allow you to slide the new face onto both needles without messing up the calibration. Honestly though, I don't see how you can entirely avoid moving the fuel gauge needle at least a little when sliding the face on. Just make a mental note where it was before you do the install. This part of the installation is difficult to explain without pictures, but if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

*bump* I'm thinking about getting custom guages for my 95 GS now, and all the information I've searched for through these forums have been very helpful, so thanks to the community out there for the big help. I understand the process to actually fitting the dial faces over the guages now thanks to all these posts, but how do I go about removing the dash panels to actually GET to the guage cluster??? I'm a big newbie when it comes to the whole car modding thing, so before I go and order the guage faces, I'd like to know what's involved in the initial part of the installation procedure. As I understand it, the molds of the dash panels are slightly different depending on the year of our MX-3's, so in my case, what part(s) of a 95 dash do I need to remove and how do I remove them to get to the guage cluster?? Thanks in advance, once again!! :)
