I'm very new to the mx3 area... i'm looking into getting rid of my 2nd gen protege and picking up one of these... i've been looking around a little and i saw that a swap from i4 to v6 was not highly recomended buti couldn't find a lot of info on it.. is it just because there are a lot more parts needed to do the swap? or just that it is next to impossible to do? any info on this would be great.. thanks guys

Seems like an awful lot of work for not alot of realized benefit. If you've got a 4, I'd just get the Jap spec Turbo version. If you've got a V6, just drop a 2.5L in. Doign the I-4 to V6 swap, you could spend a year just getting all the parts you need together. If you were going to go through all the trouble of swapping harnesses, though, I guess you could at least look at a OBD-2 version of the V6 like in the Millenia 2.5L V6. I believe the 2000+ versions of that engine have solid lifters so you don't need to worry about valve tick ever creeping up.

i figured it would be a lot... just to do the 1.5L to 1.8L swap in my protege would take an entire front clip to do entirely right... there are short cuts but if you are going to do a swap like that you want all strong pieces... wouldn't the swap from a 1.6 i4 to a 2.5 v6 be a large difference in power? even just with stock? it seems like it would be worth it and it wouldn't take a year.. just get the front clip and you are set

yes and no for the amount you will spend in swapping to the 1.8 v6 you can easily swap the BPT engine into the 4cyl and see more power

since you haven't bought a MX3 yet...why not save a HUGE step and just buy a V6?

ultimately that is what i am looking for... but no matter which i get a swap is the only way to get the larger v6 as far as i know... i am just trying to gather as much info on as many options as possible before picking up a car.. cause if i can get a i4 in good condition for around 1400 but a v6 is around 2500 to 3000 it would seem that i could possibly get the i4 and swap the 2.5 v6 in an spend no more than 3000 total... although i'm still looking into the possibilities of how good the 1.8L v6 is

99.9% of the people here will advise you to save the $$$ for a V6 and swap either a 2.5 into it.....or to get an I4 and swap a BPT or something like that. trying to convert will cost you alot more

You want to know how the stock 1.8L V6 is? If you've never driven one yet, you should. It's pretty fun to drive in stock form. It's a 'sporty' car, but hardly a sports car. But you do have to rev it high to go fast. The engine pulls 7800RPM before the engine stops, and even at 7800, she's pretty quiet. It's a very refined engine. The fastest I've had mine so far is 130MPH, and she still had a little left on the tachometer. It's plenty fun for daily driving, it just isn't going to win you very many drag races. But a very rewarding car overall.

Exactly bro, if you get a I4 , tehn swap in the BPT and if you get the V6 then swap in the KL ZE, but to be honest, you make that BPT pretty freakin quick, so don't think that becasue it s a 4 banger, ITS slow , cuz it won't be!

i know... the i4 1.8 is capable of over 400 hp from what i understand... but i'd never need that much power... i want my car to have some good power but not a ridiculous amount.. right now i have a 1.5L protege and it kinda sucks for power... and i'm kinda nervouse about the 1.6 cause it isn't that much bigger but if there are parts available to get it up to say 180 at least i'd be pretty happy

I would suggest to go with your maintenance habit..

A turbo engine is more maintenance than a N/A Car..

And a 1.6l, you could always bolt a 323 turbo to it, instead of the BPT..

Go with your goals, and how you are, really..

Sorry guys I am somewhat clueless...can someone give me more info on what the BPT is. I too am wanting to swap engines in my MX-3, but I too have just the 4cylinder engine. If links can be provided or someone can give me the low-down on BPT's then that'd be cool...like how hard it is to get them, how much power they output etc etc. thanks in advance for the help!

there are many b series engines... the bpt is from the first generation of the protege it is a 1.8L engine *jspec* with a turbo on it.. the engine can handle well over 300 hp... there are also other 1.6L dohc engines that can be swapped in or if you already have the dohc from what i've been hearing you can simply take internals from other dohcs and put those in your current one also you can then put the turbo manifold from another 1.6 dohc ...
