Rear wheel bearings (How long should it take to install?

Post by quicksliver »

BOTH of my rear wheel bearings need to be replaced. I got the replacement parts today, but since i don't know jack about this stuff...i'll need to get em' installed by a professional.

My question is...how many hours on average should this process take a regular down the street mechanic? That is to install BOTH rear wheel bearings? I have a 92' mx-3 GS.

Took me half an hour. So not more than 1 hour for a mecanic.
1.Jack up the car.
2.Take of the wheel.
3.Loosen and take of brake-caliper.
4.Take brake-disc of.
5.Loosen 32mm nut in center(this nut can be hard too loosen.
6.Replace wheel bearing.

it is the easiest job ever, not more than one hour!
Never think that you will get two if you don't give one!!

Do you need to have a special tool to 'press' it in?

Nope, the big 32mm nut holds it. it goes right on. Hope that you will do it your self it`s pretty easy and will save you some money. Good luck.

Yea It's super easy I did it on my protege, but it had rear drums, but I imagine it's pretty similar maybe even easier with rear disc's. I love the sealed bearings, so simple and clean...

Hub locknut:- 130 to 173 ft-lbf; 18 to 24 kgf-m
Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)
