Magnetic Oil Drain Plug's on ebay....

Post by DJsMX-3 »

Well im qurious if theese could actually hurt anything and if they do have a positive effect..

If the magnet actually is strong enough i can see how the metalparticles would cling to it,but im a little worried if it allso could have some sort of negative effect on the engine :)

Take a look:

I can't really comment on their use on car engines, but I have seviced aero gas turbine engines for a number of years and they make extensive use of magnetic sump plugs in the oil sumps of the engines and any ancilliaries that have oil lubrication. These were used more as an indicator of impending component failure(the metal particles & oil samples were then sent to test dept to establish what component they had come from, or the component was changed ) rather than as a means of preventing metal particles circulating through the engine(that's what your oil filter is for).

I agree with mitmaks, they are good, and will not affect the engine in any way. The oil filter doesn't catch everything.

I have just changed oil on my girlfriends Suzuki and it has one these plugs. It had some oil/metal-splines on it. I think it is a very good idea to use these.

For god sake dont spend 8 bucks on one of these. take the dimmesions of the drain plug to autozone and you can pick one up for 1.89. did it last oil change and this time it came out with a few shavings. definatly worth 2 bucks to potentially save a thousand
