Try aftermarket Bronzoil bushings.

I had same prob especially from 1st - 2nd - 3rd when the weather and car was cold. After putting in SRD bronzoil bushings and SRD extension rod bushing when installing a B&M short throw shifter, the shift action became consistently smooth and precise. I would expect that to be the case whether you decided to go with the STS or just the bushings. Links for the bushings are here...

Rod, not cable. Here are a couple of related how-to's on Gro Harlem's site that will give a better idea with some useful pics too...

http://www.projectmazda.com/howto/shifter/ goes thru short shifter install including Bronzoil bushings.

http://www.projectmazda.com/howto/bushings/ goes thru install of the extension rod urethane bushings.

p.s. ya might get a mod request to downsize that sig pic...
