Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
Alright guys, I know this topic is done to death all over these forums, and I've read all of the tutorials and whatnot that I can find. I still feel the need to clarify.
I've got a 92 GS (1.8 V6). The engine I just bought is a KLZE 2.5.
I'm going to have the engine shipped to a mechanic to do the swap. What else am I going to need? I'm pretty sure I'll need a 2.5 ECU, right? Do I need to get that ahead of time? If i let the mechanic locate one, will he charge me an arm and a leg?
What about the VAF? Can it be used from my 1.8? Anything else I would need to supply the mechanic?
Thanks guys. Sorry for yet another KLZE swap thread, I just want to be sure I've got everything covered here.

Re: Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
Yeah, I don't blame you, though this has been posted to death...
You will need a ZE ECU. Try to get one now from Lazzyie on this UBB. He takes a while, but he knows his stuff. You will use the VAF from the 1.8 (JE-50 if I'm not mistaken). Also, be sure to change all the necessary gaskets and any other parts that might be going out soon. It's alot easier to deal with right now.
FYI: If you have the KL-01 cammed ZE (curve-neck), the VRIS points will be a little off with the ECU. If you have the KL-31 cammed straight neck, remember that you'll need a Millenia IM.
Good Luck!

Thanks.
Is there a way for me to tell which (curved or straight) neck I have?

Patrick (PATDIESEL on the UBB) from MOCA is working on a great KL-ZE swap page... He has some pretty comprehensive lists of everything you need.

Re: Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
Ahh, thank you very much bmwm3guy. It is in fact a curved neck then.
Thank you guys very much for your patience with me on this. I know you see this a lot. I appreciate it.
A big question I've been getting from the mechanics I've been asking to do the swap is "does the wiring harness need to be changed/moved/removed?" I'm pretty sure it doesn't, right?
The K8 to KL swap is almost pretty much straight swap, yes? Just so that I can tell the mechanics what they'll need to do, to help them out. A bunch of them wouldn't even touch this project, because I'm supplying the engine and they're worried abour insurance and warranties etc.
I've found a few willing to do the swap, and they've quoted me between $800-1300 at a rough guess, assuming that no serious adaptation work needs to be done. They also quoted a finish time of anywhere between 3 to 5 days.
What about headers? Should I buy new headers?
Here are pics of the new engine...

Re: Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
Thanks for the wiring info
And yeah, that's why I grabbed that one. It was a little bit more expensive than some of the other ones that were available, but I figured it was worth it.

My Gawd That thing is clean. Looks Brand Spanking New.
Re: Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
When you say "grabbed that one", what do you mean? Did you go to a store or something to get it? I assumed that you would have to order online for these engines...excuse my ignorance.

Re: Bear with me... just bought a KLZE...
Yes, I ordered it online. But there are many engines online I could have bought, from different places. This one was the most promising. I could have bought a KLZE for a few hundred dollars less, if I had wanted to, but this one was clean enough to warrant the extra $$.
Now all I have to do is find a KLZE ECU... I looked at the ones for sale by Lazzyie, but they take 4-6 weeks to arrive. I was sort of hoping to get this swap done a bit quicker than that. I may let the mechanic locate one.

or use your K8 Intake Manifold and the K8 ECU until you find a KLZE ECU...
