Hey all 2 questions for you...

1st- has any1 done dual exaust, and is it worth doing?

2nd(not about dual exaust)- is there any way I could have a removable cat, And have pipeing to replace where the cat would be and be able to switch the 2 easily? or does the cat need to be welded? the reason I ask is because of the new law that’s going to be in effect soon in PA...

Dual exhaust has proven to not be worth it. Gains were minimal if any and the extra weight negated any gains.

As for the second question, the cat does not have to be welded. Some can be bolted. In that case replacing the cat with a test pipe would be a matter of working with the bolts.

ok first off I have dual exhaust and i love it but thats just me.also everyone that has been in or around my car says they love the sound of it compared to there import. As far as gains over single exhaust i got no idea.its a bit of a pain cause of the POS wheel well is in teh way, so that has to be beaten upwards or taken out. alright and as far as the removable cat,our cars come with them and yes you could put a pipe in there in place of it whenever you want.

dual exhaust might net you a decent gain, thats assuming you are doing a TRUE dual exhaust setup one straight pipe running off each exhaust manifold.

If you are just talking about taking the existing piping, splitting it off into two and having two mufflers, then thats just going to add weight (probably 20+ lbs!), and add to the rice factor of your car. I know a guy with an escort who did that and I bust out laughing every time I see his car drive by hahahahaha.

Also, unless your exhaust is tuned for your car, you may loose more than you gain. They do however make a bypass pipe for exhausts. Ive seen them on ebay, and its a V shapd vavle that is switchable. Been a while since I saw them.

For one thing dual exhaust looks sick on the MX3 but that all depending what tips you use. Another thing...why would you use 2 mufflers that would be gay. You get a muffler like the 80series flowmaster made for camero's, have it installed under your wheel well and run your piping from there. I think you would good gains and also an awesome sound from it over the ricey single exhaust ****. i just dont like the look of the single exhaust at all, i never have.

you are probably already very familiar with PA emissions. I know I am. However lots of the more rural counties in PA have no emissions. I hear that it will soon be statewide but not sure when it goes into effect.

How on earth would splitting the exhaust tip off the muffler into 2 longer (heavier) pipes increase power whatsoever?

For one thing...if you take a stock car, and just replace its muffler, you will likely see less than a 2whp gain, if not a 0whp gain. Very few cars see gains from just mufflers. So how on earth would exhaust tips give you gains?

The only dual exahust works for power is if you do it right. To do it right, you have to route one pipe (with muffler, unless you want it LOUD) off each cylinder bank. This means you'd need two cats, two mufflers and figure out how to route the second pipe to the drivers side rear bumper. This adds weight, and WOULD sound much better, and would add power but would be very expensive for an exhaust shop to do.

oh, alright, I thought he was talking about something else. We had this forever here in philly. Lucky rural guys, didn't have to worry about it.

btw, where in philly area are you from?

Actually the pipe is more of a 'y' than a 'V' ;)

Also, about the dual exhaust. Like Barry said, you would have to tune the exhaust to the car (difficult at best for a novice) and then you'd still have minimal gains. Unless you're pushing serious gasses thru a high horsepower engine. (N/Z or FI) Then you may see considerable gains. Most people think that a simple exhaust will give high gains, but it's worthless trying to get more volume out of the engine if you don't put more in (intake work). For a stock MX-3 it's more work than it's worth.

no gro i didnt do it for power this time around.Actually it was the only option i had at the time to do the dual exahust.but if you were to do it the right way like i explained you would get good gains and way better sound than any PS or whatever muffler. If you got the money i say you go ahead and try it, i bet you will love it.

actually x pipes or h pipes are used in dual exhaust systems. and if you are really running a dual exhaust setup you better be running stock k8 size exhaust from each manifold. anything more would be too big for a n/a engine. if you do gain on paper, we all know paper is worthless against the extra weight added to the whole side of a car.

I have a dual exhaust:
Full stainless steel with custom 3-1 headers and two 2" pipes going straight through the car in 2 Magnaflow mufflers, spare tire well removed.

Sound: horrible.
Shop cost: VERY high.
Vibration and loudness: almost unacceptable.
Performance: quite good but I had my Ze with stock exhaust before, so probably everything would be better...

My 2 cents,

Guido
