The clutch isn't engaged.....
It seems that these symptoms do not point to a single problem.
First, if the rpm indication dropped to zero, but you could hear the engine running - you had just an instrument failure. Most likely cause is a dodgy electrical connection.
Second, if the clutch wasn't engaged (i.e. if your foot was not off the pedal) then it is to be expected that the drive would not function, as it would be disconnected by the clutch. Maybe you didn't mean that. If so, and if you could hear the engine revving, and there was no drive, it suggests the clutch is slipping. The rpm is indicated straight off the engine, so nothing to do with the clutch. Two separate problems.

ok sorry guys im not to good with engine stuff. so wat do i do now? wat do u guys suggest i do. so ur saying its prolly my cluth?
y would my cluth be slipping liek this. wouldnt it slip all the time and not jsut once in a blue moon? liek i said it happened twice last night and once like 2 weeks ago. and its only happened when i was in 5th on the highway with my foot off the cluth amd jsut cruising. and then it goes back to normal without me doin anythign to it. down shifting to 4th didnt do anythign.
and if it was a guage cluster thing then wouldn't the entire cluster die including the tach, and temp gauge?
sorry guys im not too smart with engines so dont laugh at me if is said something stupid or missed somthin really obvoius

Nothing is wrong with your engine.

it cant just be a fualty tach. cuz like i said above when the tach dies the power also dies there for i have no power, so it can't jsut be the teach

Your 5th gear may be burning up.. Like maybe a few teeth missing from the gear.. And it could be the clutch you never know.. I would just take it to a shop somewhere and let them deal with it. Like you said, you dont really know a lot about engines so that would be your best bet.

OK, there is a possibility that you are getting a momentary electrical fault, which affects the tachometer and the ignition circuits (but not if the engine is revving, which is what I thought you said originally). If that's the case, take it to an auto electrician.

it probably has something to do with your new disty, since these problems started after you installed it and the disty sends the signal to your tach and controls the ignition.
My question is when you "lose power" does your car slow down?, did you step on the gas and hear the RPMs increase?
