Noisy Lifters...How Big Of An Issue?

Post by Nd4SpdSe »

My KLZE has noisy lifters, i;ve tried putting a cleaner but it didnt get rid of it, i need to do an oil change and see if it'll help
My engine is under warranty for just under a month left, so i was thinking of calling them up, but wondering, how big of a deal it is? I know you can mask it by putting thicker oil or some thicker additive, but i dont know what need to be replaced, if i can just replace teh lifters, or if i should replace the engine...

I've used Mobil 1 synthetic and a mazda oil filter and that really quieted the HLA racket down.

Are you using 5W30 weight oil? I found that even using standard 5W30 made alot of the noise go away, and switching to Royal Purple 5W30 made it go away even more. The only time I notice lifter noise anymore is when I pull into the garage and it amplifies all the noises the engine is making.

I know you can do that, but it doesnt fix the problem, just hides it, also, isnt 5w thicker?...i still wanna try that amsoil oil tho. Im currently using castrol gtx 10w30/40 (i cant remember).
If the noisy lifters something to worry about or no?

Correct me if I am wrong.. but I remember reading something about a cam friction gear making a bad ticking noise as well.. I have this annoying ticking that has been there for ages, it only comes in when I am cruising at a speed- (goes away under acceleration) Apparently the labour on this is damn Xpensive.. this may be your problem if the oil change doesn't fix it.
From what I understand it goes not affect your performance, just drives you insane with tick tick tick tick..

it slowly got quieter when we ran it for the first hour when be put her in, than i added some stuff thats suppose to help, and it did, but it still there...plus, my mechanic said its the lifters, so im gonna trust him and say its the lifters
im not really worried about performance, it just that if will potentiall do some hard like seize, explode, break apart and damage a piston or something

Just had the friction spring replaced in mine total cost £158 inc parts and tax.
Sadly it made bugger all difference to the noise so I guess it must be the tappets (HLAs whatever).
The mechanic said you could only hear it above 4k, so to ignore it - muppet, I spend more time above 4K than below !
Stuart
[ September 03, 2003: Message edited by: HFStuart ]

Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
Extra thick soundproofing in the boot (trunk) to quieten my stainless steel exhaust system :)

Read it a while ago. Will be testing the HLAs soon.
Gragage checked with a stethoscope (spelling ?) and said the noise was definately not big ends, which is good because that's exactly what it sounded like to me.
Question - my tapping noise goes away completeley when I lift off at revs and is most noticable at light / part throttle. Is that typical for HLA noise ?
Stuart

I believe you'd only hear HLA problems at idle. At least that't the only time I've ever ben able to hear mine.
