WD-40 VS BELT DRESSING

Ok, I actually heard you could put either on your belts to prevent squealing. Will any of these products cause damage to your belts?

I used wd40 on mine for a while and nothing happened. If you know someone who could tighten the belts, it will probably get rid of the sound though.

you can buy a belt dresing spray for oyu local auto shop.

its actualy really easy to toighetn the belts cause there is a bolt that puts tention on a pully. follow the belts and you will see a pully with nothing atached to it but a long bolt. If you tighten it, it will put more pressure on the belt

is this solution temporary? how much should you tighten this bolt? will the added pressure cause the belt to snap? does the bolt have an easy access and has anyone actually done this?

ID say tighten the belt, if not, use dishwashing soap... you think Im crazy, but im serious, it works.

Too many miles on a loose belt, even a newer one, causes it to get a shiny, hard glazed surface, which rubs on the pulley as it rotates, causing a squeal. Replace it with a new one, adjust it to the proper tension, drive about 5-10 miles, retension it again, problem solved.<p>Wd-40, belt dressing, soap, tranny fluid, etc will all quiet it down, for a while.....but ultimately what you really need is a new belt, properly adjusted.

Not entireley true. My brand new belt, tightedned down to factory specs steal squeaked due to the residue on the pulleys them self from a leak I had. The soap helped remove the residue.

In that case I would have used soap too, provided whatever was leaking was fixed first and the belt was relatively new. I was just going on the assumption his pulley was "normal" (no residue, properly aligned, nothing leaking on it, etc). I'm just not a big fan of putting lubricants and sprays on belts to quite them down when usually (not always) its a shiny, glazed, misadjusted belt that is the problem.

the belt is cheap it's the labor thats going to cost me... (replacing the timing belt)

Hey actually wd40 is not good to use on any rubber products it has kerosene it ot over time it will eat and destroy rubber .

Ummm no I dont think you want to put anything at all on your Timing belt. Replace it.

i think your right about the wd-40 a friend of mine just told me the same thing...well its all taken care of now. I was coming back from Adams Morgan in MD and my belts just started squealing like crazy, lucky for me I made it home without any damage. The next morning I knew I had to get it fix so I prayed all the way to high teck. I realized it was the alternator belt b/c my warning signals started blinking all of a sudden, oil, battery, brake. I ended up replacing two belts: alternator and power steering. It runs squeal free and it only cost me $180.00.
