car won't go in reverse

the other day i was driving my car and when i got hit by a red light i had to stop when i stopped my car shut off,then when i start it back up and get goin i parked to run in to the store and when i went to go in reverse from where i was parked in wouldn't go it felt like the car was in park..
.......if anyone knowz what could be causing this
and how i can fix it, it would be highly appreciated......
