Maybe oil pressure switch? Can you find a leak anywhere?
[ May 05, 2003: Message edited by: Bri94GS ]

Rings for sure, I'm assuming you got a tons of miles on it, borrow a compression tester and see how much of a variance you get between cylinders.

Burning some oil is normal for an older car. I burn about a quart between oil changes. Just check it on a regular basis and keep it topped off.

was it burning before you switched to the high mileage oil? What are you running? 5w30? 10w30?

So your saying 160,000 kms is low, but your using High Mileage motor oil.
A good sign of woren rings is when you pull out from a stop and you let out a puff of smoke.

Yea, i'd agree...i think it's the rings as well...maybe try some engine treatment and running 5w30? If that doesn't work, bring it somewhere to get the rings checked

I would first eliminate the areas were oil leaks are most likely.
1) valve covers
2)oil filter
3)oil pan gasket and oil drain plug
4)oil pressure switch
most of these leaks are small enough that they won't leave a puddle and/or are burned off by the motor.
black smoke is not oil burning but unburned fuel.
It can also be a sign of a clogged catylitic conv.
if its a leak, find it and fix it. if its not then keep a close eye on your oil level and always have a quart or two in the car.
I wouldn't waste your money on a ring job or valve job. drive it till it drops. then put a 2.5L in.
