EGR Position Sensor... What does it do?

I recently had a check engine light blink a couple times while at idel, at a stop light. I did an engine diagnosis the code I got was 16. This Haynes tech book says its the Egr position sensor. What is the result of a bad sensor? are they expensive to replace? Is it a dealer part or can I get it at Napa auto? I have a 1993 GS V6 1.8L AT, any help on this matter would be appreciated...

It's part of the EGR valve, it tells the PCME what position the EGR valve is in, and you can't replace it without replacing the EGR valve.
