does custom intake help?

well, first of all let me give you my car's background. i bought like two months ago for 3000 and it had 71k miles on it. it is a gs v6. this is my first car so i really want to keep it for a while and make it awesome.
ok to the question...my car started to make a wierd "jump" when i would start accelerating. it would happen between 1 and 2 rpm. took to a friend that know about cars and found that the tube that goes from intake to motor had a hole. so for now i have to sealer and maskin tape on it.
its working perfect now but i know i'm going to have to replace that tube someday. what i was thinking is to get a performance(rpm?) intake for my car and replace the whole damn thing. is this a good idea? and if it is what will i get out of it? does the custom intake help? does it make it faster, sound cooler, and/or increase gas-efficiency?
thanks for all your help in advance. also, (almost forgot) whats the best intake out for the mx-3 and how much would it cost?

you can get a prm but they do not replace the tube from the vaf/to the throttle body, you can make one though from pvc pipe couplings at your local homedepot or just make the whole thing from pvc and a cone filter, yes it makes a cool vrooooom sound at wide open throttle, makes acceleration a tad better as for gas mileage? beats me. Oh also welcome and since you will hear it alot if you ask questions we have all seen a million times there is a search feature at the top right of the screen :)
[ October 06, 2002: Message edited by: lazzyie ]
