Fuel Economy

Post by UoMDeacon »

I've got a fuel economy question for you guys. I have a '93 GS manual and I'm only getting about 25mpg at each fill-up. I drive mostly high-way miles, since I commute to work every day. Checking on the internet, it says that I should be getting around 32...Just wondering what could be wrong? Is there anything I or my mechanic can do to help out the situation? With oil prices where they are right now, I think a repair would probably pay for itself in a few months.

I get 330km to a tank in the city. It's usually 37 litres when I fill up.

Actually I get only 21mpg in the city but I get 29-30mpg on the highway. I'm pretty much stock except K&N airfilter.

Here are the recommended shift points according to the mx-3 owners manual for cruising (should produce best gas mileage):
1.6-liter
1 to 2 11 mph (18 km/h)
2 to 3 18 mph (29 km/h)
3 to 4 29 mph (47 km/h)
4 to 5 42 mph (68 km/h)

1.8-liter
1 to 2 15 mph (24 km/h)
2 to 3 22 mph (35 km/h)
3 to 4 32 mph (51 km/h)
4 to 5 41 mph (66 km/h)
So how often do you guys/gals match those shift recommendations? ... me very rarely.... lol

That's the way our motor is built, you have to rev it high to get power, just like my ninja motorcycle. (14,000rpm redline)

You've got the Ninja 250? I think that is the one that redlines so high. I am looking at getting the 500.

Ya i have the 250, it's fast (0-60mph in 5.5 seconds)for such a small displacement engine but alot a fun too. I use to have the 500 as well. Its a great bike too. I had to get something cheaper on insurance and not get into trouble as fast as the bigger bikes.

Well I got the V6 and always drive in fifth in the city (About 60 km/h) without problems.
Ofcause if I want acceleration I will shift down to 3rd, but just for driving around it's the fifth.
My car is close to stock except for a KN airfilter and I usuaully get around 500 km out 40 litres (12.5 km/litre)
This include some both city and highway driving.
[ April 16, 2003: Message edited by: Balhirath ]
