Clacking Engine noise on cold start
Most of the time after my car has been parked for about 12 hours of more, when I start it, it makes a clacking noise. The noise seems to be coming from the bank of 3 cylinders closest to the firewall. The noise remains when the engine rpms are increased.. The noise however disappears after about 1 minute of driving.. (once the engine has heated up a bit..) Has anyone had this problem or know what it is?? Thanks!

do a search for hla's, might need to change your oil more often too

Not positive but could be the HLAs. I've been reading a lot about them and it takes up to 10min for them to get propper ammounts of oil. If you hear a ticking noise that goes away it's most likey the HLAs. Change your oil more often and run synthetic and maybe an engine flush, clean them out before they decide to start ticking all the time.

i had a similar problem, but i changed my oil and also added STP smoke treatment(makes the oil a tad thicker) and ran it at idle for a little while and that was the end of it, no more noise. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Re: Clacking Engine noise on cold start
just ignore it, it goes away after a couple of minutes anyways :p
Mine have been doing the same thing since driving it off the lot in "93". I even questioned two different dealers on this when the car was still under warranty and they both said the same thing, live with it.
Keeping fresh oil seems to minimize the noise some.
they did have a more technical response but it boiled down to what I said.
If you had a collapsed lifter that would be a different story. but also the sound would not go away and the car would not run 100%.
Andy P. 93 GS

Mine has always been like that as well. If the oil is new it will stop after 1-2 minutes of idle or if the oil is getting old then it would stop after 3-4 minutes of idle.
