It is most likly valve seals or rings. I'm guessing its probally rings. You could either rebuild the lower end or have the heads checked out and rebuilt(not sure which one it would be). You could even buy a used engine and drop it in. Hell, the situation might be a good incentive to purchase a kl-ze or kl-de and do a swap, atleast now you have motivation and a purpose to do it! If you go KL-DE you'd being paying just as much as you would for a used k8 engine..if not less because they're a pretty easy motor to source out. Either way you go, buying a used engine will be more cost effective then rebuilds. Thats just my opinion, hope it helps you out with your problem. good luck!<P>Tom

Compression check and do a leak down this will tell you if your valve seats are gone....I dont' think it's your rings but they are probobly almost gone anyway so I'd start looking for motors to swap or get your current motor fixed....but in the long run it's more cost effective to get a 2.5 kl-03 or kl-ze...good luck man
