Please help - need KL-ZE info

Post by Baja_Wes »

Please help me with info, I am desperate.
I own a pretty wild vw (see my website). It currently has a reasonably powerful engine, and goes well (low 16's 1/4 mile). The only thing is I want air/con, and heating. To adapt both to the current engine would be quite difficult, and it would be somewhat easier and more benefit would be gained by jamming a jap import engine in it.
Since the standard engine is a flat 4, I need a short engine. A lot of people have put wrx engines in vw's, but I don't like wrx'es and the sump hangs too low for offroading.
Inline 4's are probably a bit long and would look funny in the engine bay, lots of room either side. So I thought a nice small capacity v6 would be good. Like the 2.5lt 2vz-fe camry motor, or the KL-ZE 2.5L mazda motor.
Does anyone have any info on this motor? I need to know the weight of it, which will be difficult to find. I also need to know all the dimensions and stuff. Does anyone have any good links to info on this engine? Is this a good engine or should I avoid it? On paper it seems good. Is it all alloy, or does it have a cast iron block.
I asked these questions on toyota forums about the toyota engine, and got no useful responses. Please help me guys. A 200HP KL-ZE motor should give me high 13s 1/4 mile, and good low down performance for lugging about offroad.
Image
[ March 26, 2002: Message edited by: Baja_Wes ]

Check some of the links in my sig.
It's a pretty small motor externally. Weighs around 380# for the complete assembly.

I used to know alot about MX-3's, but not so much anymore. Oh well.

how sure are you about that weight? My vw engine is only 210lbs. Does the mazda engine have a cast iron block or something?
My engine and gearbox would be less than 380lbs.

I looked at some of the links, they are very good, thanks a lot. I am still after the weight though. The link emphasises light-weight, but never says what it is.
Oh, and I figured out it is an alloy block. Center split crank case like a vw?

horizontally split, not vertically split.
I found a good page for old car engine weights. http://www.aviator.cc/weights2.txt
It says old chev and buick engines are 350lb. A rover 3.5 V8 is 318lb. Surely the mazda engine is less than 300lb.

You ask for info and then doubt it.
The Mazda V-6 is heavier than you might think since it is a DOHC. Veedub engines are lighter since they are air cooled, no water pump, cooling jackets, etc. But you should know that right?
Cast iron Chevy/Buick small blocks weigh about 550 lbs.
The Olds/Buick V-8 from the early 60's you speak of is the all aluminum 215 in. and is the basis of the Rover 3.5/3.9/4.0/4.2/4.6L engines. This V-8 weighs about 340 lbs (uses a cam installed in the "V" but physically the same size as a SBC) and adapters are available for bolting it to a VW. If you want more info on this engine, then email me to get this non Mazda info off this board. jcork@tcainternet.com
[ March 26, 2002: Message edited by: pelado ]

David, you link to pictures doesn't seem to work.
I am legally limited to 2.5L as the biggest engine I can put in my car.
So a 60's 3.5L v8 weighs 340lbs, but a recent technology designed to be lightweight 2.5L v6 weighs 380lbs? It just seems a bit heavy. What accessories does that include on the engine?

I spoken to two jap engine importers. One says 265lbs just the engine, and the other says 365lbs engine and gearbox. I think they are both guessing.

This morning I just lifted a Mazda 2.5 V6 engine from a van and put it into my garage. It's very heawy. Me and my friend could not hold it in air for more than a second or two. I estimate it at around 150 - 170 kg (330 - 380 lbs).
The engine was complete but without the tranny and flywheel/clutch.
So add another 60 kg (130 lbs) for this.
(i have a spare tranny lying around and know how much it weights)
Now I have a 2.5 KL03 that needs new head gaskets an then we go. MX-3 GSR.

ok, so you and a friend can only hold it for a second or two. Unless your huge, I don't think it'd be any more than 300lbs.
A beetle engine is 205lbs, and me and a friend can hold it for a minute, but you'll be pretty sore afterwards. A type 4 vw engine is 250lbs, and we can only hold it for a second or two. They are quite heavy.
So it sounds like a 2.5L V6 ain't much heavier than a type 4 vw (unless your huge).
I don't suppose you feel like getting two bathroom scales, putting a big peice of wood between the two, put the v6 on the wood and weigh it?

Well, I may not have the figures you want for the engine, but I KNOW the tranny weighs 80-90#. :)

Maybe you should try for a late model Subaru engine swap. It should weigh about the same as a waterboxer while making more HP. And it weighs exactly 250 pounds.

First I must go out and buy two bathroom scales :-) It's a heavy beast believe me.
The V6 version of MX-3 is something like 150 lbs heavier than the 1.6 I4 version.
Most of the weight difference is in the engine.
I trust my judgment about the weight. the low 330 lbs estimation must be very close.

The majority of the guys on the probetalk forum seem to think it is about 250lbs. A few guys there have lifted it no probs, and even put it in the hatch of their probe. One guy has a shipping order receipt that says 250lbs.
If I go ahead and buy one, I will weigh it and we'll all know once and for all.

Well I finally found a good cheap Jap MX6 half cut, which I have purchased. It will be a little while before I get the engine out by itself, but when I do I will tell you guys how much it weighs.
I am keeping a diary of the transplant too.
http://offroadvw.net/bajawes/linktoV6.htm
