chirping sound coming from dash

Post by Len-Dogg »

I recently developed some kind of chirping sound. It sounds like it's coming from my dash, although I haven't opened the hood up when it's happening to check the engine bay. It sound like a bunch of little birds chirping away when I am idling. It does not happen when I am driving the car, only when it's sitting still idling. Maybe it's just the temp changing around here and the belts are changing a little bit? Not sure. Anyone had this problem?
Thanks,
Jason

Actually if it's comming from your dash it's most likely the blower fan for your heater. I hear that sometimes when it's cold. If it's not that then it could be just pastic rubbing. Take you glove box off and have a closer listen.

Ya, it really sounded like the heater to me too, except that I turned it off and the sound didn't go away. You are right it very well may be something rubbing in the dash, because my car vibrates a ton due to my exhaust. It's a long story. Anyway, if it happens again, I will get out and open the hood and see if I think it's coming from the engine or the dash. Then at least I will know for sure where it's coming from. Once it's warmer, I am hoping everything will expand and fit better, thus less vibration. LOL

Ok, well it's definitely not coming from the engine which is a relief. Something in the dash, who knows. Oh well, I don't plan on sitting and idling too much anyway, so I guess I will just deal.

I'd also suggest checking the mounting bracket that is holding your deck in place. Sometimes they can loosen up from the weight of your deck bouncing.

Here's an update. I have now isolated that this sound only happens when I press the brake in. That's why I only heard it in idle. When I am idling, and I push in the brake, I hear the chirping sound from the dash, and when I let out the brake, it goes away. Stragest thing. Anybody ever hear of this? I will probably just have the belts all tightened or something and I think that might fix it.

I still think it's in your dash. When you step on the brake, your car idles differently because of the added electrical load of the brakes and the brake lights, therefor causing a different vibration through your dash board.

Ok everyone, basically thanks for the help, and I'm sorry I wasted your time because I found out what it is, and it was my stupid-ness. haha Long story short, my exhaust didn't quite fit right when I put it on, and so it rubs at one point. I put a "patch" there in between the pipe and the underbody of the car to keep it from rubbing, and secured that patch with a hose clamp. Well, all it is is the metal hose clamp rubbing back and forth against the metal of the underbody of the car. No big deal, I will just wrap it or something so that it's not metal on metal contact. I'm so relieved that nothing is actually wrong! Thanks again.<p>Jason
